Is there a way to notify the user of changes since last login?

I’m working with a client who wants to display a notice to the user when the status of an entry is changed in the control panel. Brandon Kelly had an add-on called Snitch that would let you do things when an entry’s status changed, but there is no version I can find for EE2.

Basically, I’d like to be able to (a) send an email to the end user and (b) place a notification in the user’s member area when he logs in next saying that an entry he authored had a status change.

Is there any way I can “listen” for an entry update when my client updates an entry from the control panel? It’d be simple enough to do from a front-end template, but I have no idea how to trigger a script when an entry is updated via the CP.
