member field_type : question

Hi, Is there a direct approach to add a field type to member module ? currently i am achieving through a hack but i think there has to be a hook or some work around to add my custom field type to the existing ones.
Any help ?

I have never used this plug-in myself, but it appears that the Zoo Visitor add-on might have what you are looking for.

but my issue is that i need to allow my own custom field type in member custom fields for an add on i am developing…as of now i see that there are only text, textarea and select provided. is there a way that i can integrate my fieldtype directly to the list of available ones ? or a hack as an extension to the member module to provide my own view templates for the field types ?
