Human Readable Search Result URLs

By default, the basic Search module uses a path like /[channel]/[results page]/[search id]. Instead of the search id, I want it to use the search term provided. Secondarily, I’d like to be able to create URLs like that which automatically load the search results for the provided term. Is anyone familiar with how to do this? I’m comfortable mucking around in the Search module php if need be.
