Undocumented "random" parameter for tags?

I am running into a problem when testing my latest plugin… When testing the plugin with identical params and tagdata, the output to the page is unpredictable and fails to behave like I would expect.

I did come across this info:

But I can’t seem to get the parameter “random” to actually work. It appears to not do anything to help the caching of identical calls.

Maybe I am missing something? Do I need to actually do anything with the “random” param (like add it to my tagdata so that multiple identical calls vary from call to call)?
