    ExpressionEngine 2.1.4-beta released!

We’ve been hard at work the past month eliminating some of the older bugs in our bug tracker.  File management was particularly bug prone and community feedback indicated that there were significant usability issues as well.  As a response to this, we’ve done a lot of ‘stripping down and building back up’ where it comes to file management.

This release brings back some features from the 1.x branch, such as the ability to overwrite files on upload.  It’s also much leaner and more efficient when it comes to handling large folders.  However, we are in no way done with the ‘building back up’ process and wanted to make that clear by designating this release as a ‘beta’ release.  In our next sprint, we’ll be focusing more on files, specifically:

Good to see progress being made on the file manager. Wish I had a site I was comfortable doing a beta upgrade on.

I’m jealous of your precipitation! We’ve been having an incredibly dry winter here (Israel), and the situation is critical. Can you Fed-Ex me some snow? Pretty please??

Slightly more on-topic, it’s good to hear about the work being done on the File Manager; I finished listening to the latest EE Podcast about that very topic just the other day. 😊

It’d be great if you could post the full beta version changelog in the user guide.

There’s a download link at the bottom of the download page for the beta docs.

The file manager is great for sites where you want to restrict upload locations, but I (and I’m sure many others) would love the ability to manage sub-folders to assist in further managing large amounts of files/images uploaded.

Also for sites that are being brought across from other systems, where files sit within elaborate folder hierarchies, this would make the ability of the file manager to navigate these hierarchies all the more pertinent. Something along the lines of the CK Finder (http://ckfinder.com/) would be great.

    Cheers

Great decision to move to beta releases guys - long overdue.

I was working on integrating the file manager with an add-on yesterday so this is good timing, I’ll check out 2.1.4 now and let you know how it goes.

(ps - @sillbeer check out EECK for CK Finder integration).

An impressive list of bug fixes delivered yet again.  Thanks!

Also, I just installed the beta on a site under development and I like where you are heading with the file manager!

will test and play this week. Can you confirm if the file manager changes will be integrated into the file field type - i.e. include the feature request to select upload destination? Even if it is just so that it defaults to this location in the select?
Look forward to seeing a more usable filemanager.

May have overlooked it, but not seeing a download link for the beta anywhere, not even on the “my downloads” page.

I find that many clients do not pay attention to the upload destination drop down. They simply choose their file, and click upload. This is a problem when multiple upload paths are defined, as it defaults to let say “Documents”, which I intend for .pdfs, docs, xls files etc, but since it defaults to “Documents”, the client ends up uploading a ton of images into it, which is where I want them to upload images.

Perhaps the following change can be made:

The destination drop down does not default to any current location, instead it’s default is “Select Destination”, then only after choosing a destination do the browse and upload buttons appear. If only one destination is defined, then it defaults to it.

Or, we have the option to define one of the upload destinations as the default. Generally my clients are uploading images more often than pdfs, and I would like to make sure the images folder is the primary option.

I’ve had that same issue - clients just not paying attention and what-hey?  The file comes out on the site just fine so they never see it as an issue.

Seems like I can recall a FR from years ago that would allow us to assign a per-channel default file upload, and now with the file field type to make it a configuration at that level.

A catch-all default would be good too.

Thanks for the news. One question, i can play with the beta as well as many others i think but can i run this with MSM and Forums that i have installed - or is beta aimed to play with clean no addon installations only(with no MSM and Forum installed)?

Cheers and keep up the nice work.
