just to add a smile and a +1 for doing Betas this way.

I think it will help your situation in more than one way.

Will be checking several things on it later today. Glad as others to hear you’re really zeroing in on the File Manager and the Gallery situation, as I am sure many will benefit from these - and Ellis itself.

    Regards,
    Clive

Hi, Pete. There is an additional beta for the forums, but not for the MSM. So please if you’re going to test one, test both.

    Make sense?

    No - surely not 😊

I think most of us see that from time to time, images uploaded to folders intended for non-image files etc. My take on it is that upload destinations should be configurable a bit more, eg:

    Any file type
    Images only
    Non image file types

...perhaps in the future it would be great to be able to specify the actual file extensions that are “allowed” for each upload destination?

And thank you EE for the Beta updates!

ah ok, so upgrading forum and core itself and MSM should be fine as usual 😊
Thanks for that, *heading up to get the forum too*

I don’t tend to use the native file manager all that much but thought I’d chip in to echo the comments above - three cheers for proper beta releases.  😊

    Hi Tae,

Channel Images is more then a simple file uploader.
    It’s specially built for Images.
Let me name 3 key differences.
    - Image Upload with Progress bar
    - On the fly resizing of an image to multiple sizes
    - Watermark/Crop images

    ON-TOPIC:
    Great improvement of the Filemanager!
I hope to see more frequent releases from EE.

I find that many clients do not pay attention to the upload destination drop down. They simply choose their file, and click upload. This is a problem when multiple upload paths are defined, as it defaults to let say “Documents”, which I intend for .pdfs, docs, xls files etc, but since it defaults to “Documents”, the client ends up uploading a ton of images into it, which is where I want them to upload images.

Perhaps the following change can be made:

The destination drop down does not default to any current location, instead it’s default is “Select Destination”, then only after choosing a destination do the browse and upload buttons appear. If only one destination is defined, then it defaults to it.

Or, we have the option to define one of the upload destinations as the default. Generally my clients are uploading images more often than pdfs, and I would like to make sure the images folder is the primary option.

I would love to see this. I’ve been using SafeCracker file to make it as simple as possible for clients, so they can basically just choose their file and upload. The new file manager makes uploading much more simple than the original, but I still can’t use it because most clients would end up uploading files in the first directory that was selected. Then there is really be no point in creating more than one file upload destination.

I’ve had that same issue - clients just not paying attention and what-hey?  The file comes out on the site just fine so they never see it as an issue.

Seems like I can recall a FR from years ago that would allow us to assign a per-channel default file upload, and now with the file field type to make it a configuration at that level.

A catch-all default would be good too.

agreed! would love to see a default per-channel

First of all thumbs up, the beta file browser already seems a lot better than the previous one.

Here is my feedback/ideas I noticed when testing it, all in Chrome (on Vista):

    - With certain pictures, the lightbox ‘pops up’ in a quite weird place (at the lower right of the screen, not centered)
    - When a file with a long file name is in the list, the ‘actions’ column becomes so narrow that the ‘edit file’ pencil-icon is displayed in a second row
    - I’d like to be able to rename files manually
    - As a previous poster pointed out, sub-folders would be good
    - As a previous poster pointed out, it’d be cool if you could optionally define an ‘automatic’ sub-folder-structure (with year/month, as in /2011/01/, maybe also with the entry or file ID)
    - Ability to specify a default folder per file field would be good
    - I like the ‘crop’ feature but it’d be great if I could define the size of the ‘crop area’ by entering the numbers in the input fields to the left and have the ‘crop box’ on the right resize to that and still being able to re-position it
    - Duplicating/cloning a file would be good (so that I can get a new copy to mess around with for cropping, etc.)
    - Some of these suggestions and even more could probably also be solved by implementing some hooks (after uploading but before saving or after saving plus maybe a hook that lets devs add their own image manipulation functions)
    - The switch between “list” and “thumbnails” view is only available in the field type ‘pop up’ but not when accessing the ‘File Manager’ via the menu

    Something irritating/buggy:
    - Images uploaded via the publish form/field type are not (always?) showing up in the list of files until after saving/submitting the channel entry. But even if I replace them with another image before submitting the channel entry, they will be there (in the list of uploaded files) the next time I open the file manager

I hope this is the right place to post this, don’t make me put all of those in the bug tracker 😊.

The developer{s) that are working on this overhaul have my respect. The view mode switch is already a big improvement.

    Would be nice:
    - being able to upload larger ( > 2MB ) files (so customer don’t need to learn an FTP tool)
    - being able to upload multiple files (or a ZIP and have it auto extracted)

I’d love to have the ability to create subdirectories on the fly or a way to restrict the directories to specific users so each can have their own and no access to anyone else’s.

Okay - new to 2.x branch and now 2.14 (was getting multiple relationship errors in the CP, so boom - 2.14, like it or not).

I’m discovering a few broken things, but it could be my setup - I’m not as confidant in 2.x as I was arrogant in 1.7x 😉

    • When using the file fieldset in a form, the pop-up is centered (Mac/Firefox) but there are no previews. The manager shows a count, which mirrors the listed file count, but nothing is created.

    • Even with the file fieldtype and the directory set to accept ALL files, the file manager won’t allow PDFs to be linked to the record:

Any ideas? I’m running on Engine Hosting for this new account.

HilversumJim, did you upload all files with the File Manager in EE2? Previews get created only if you upload files with EE.
If you have used an FTP tool to upload a lot of files in one go (saving you much time compared to the one by one uploading in EE2), the problem is that EE2 will not generate thumbnails for those files. This is where a regenerate thumbnails feature by scanning the directory would be useful. Of course when EE2, some day, allows batch uploading, such feature would be less important/interesting.
