Hey! I’m sure this question has been asked before but I couldn’t find anything relevant to it.

I’m a codeigniter developer, and I want to learn Expression Engine so that I can provide my development skills to clients looking for Expression Engine (i.e. put it on my resume to open me up to more job opportunities and suggest it as a viable alternative to drupal for future contracts I get).

My question is I can’t find any trial or examples that would help me actually learn how to install, develop for it, customize it etc. without actually making a purchase, which - as a self employed developer with a lack of clients right now, is not only not an option for me, it wouldn’t actually be any use to me. Sooo for the developers out there, how did you learn it? There must be some way to do this without spending money.

Thanks 😊 Ann

Well for a start you’ll have to stop using camelCase in your signature or the EE dev’s will ignore you! j/k

To be honest, if you’re an experienced CI developer you’ll probably pick it up in no time at all. The documentation here is reasonably good: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/development/, it has example code for developing basic extensions.

But all that learning won’t be much use unless you have at least a semi-developed site with some real-world data to test on, otherwise you will never work out the best ways to do things. So you may be best to try get some EE design work and some EE experience, at least then you will have a site to test custom development on 😊
