How can I validate custom fields, say to require that the entry be an email address or phone number? I don’t see a way to do this.

I end up using clientside validation (aka javascript) to validate fields. This is the easiest and fastest solution unless you have to have serverside validation for some reason.

If you’re writing your own fieldtype you can include a validate() method in your fieldtype.
