How to Generate Template Tag in Extension?

I’m developing a new extension (my first!) and would like it to generate a simple template tag. I’ve tried looking at several other extensions that generate template tags (like Seg2Cat) but can’t seem to get it working.

Does anyone have any pointers for generating template tags within an extension. Just a simple “hello world” example would be great.

Thanks!

So I’m able to create a template tag within my extension that spits out content, but is there a way to pass a variable from the template tag (in the template) to the extension so I can control the output? For example, could I pass the url_title to the extension to control the output of the template tag?

Or is this functionality better suited to a plugin or module?
