Multiple instances of custom field in EE2

The Fieldframe module in EE1 was very useful because, among other things, it solved situations where you had to enter an unspecified number of items (a list of items) into a channel entry.

While I realize Fieldframe is going to return in some form eventually, is there anything that would allow just this functionality (multiple instances of a field) out of any of the currently available EE2 modules? If not, what alternatives do people use to handle this kind of thing other than just creating 20 custom fields?
