How do you get Plugins to display embed: data?

I’m trying to develop a plugin that displays in an embed. I realize that
{embed:goofystring}is tagdata until proven otherwise, but I still need this information to stay intact - how do I prove otherwise? Is there a well-documented method for this?

I’m lost. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
You are trying to pass information from a sub-template back to the calling template? Or are you taking a value in a parent template and want to make it available to a sub-template, then maybe change it within the sub-template and pass that value back to the parent template?
