Discussion Forum Module - extention or plug-in?

I need to add functionality to the Discussion Forum Module. I already altered the module’s code and some templates to get it working, but I really need to turn it into an extension or a plug-in so it can be re-installed after an upgrade. Any advice on which is the best route to alter an existing module?
