Just invested in a refurbished Mac Mini and got one on Wednesday. What are the best things about Macs? I am using a KVM switch so I can switch between my Windows and Mac computer, and use the Mac for iPhone development 😊

Maybe the fact that almost everything “just works”?
Also the trackpad on the new MacBooks, it is just brilliant (and that is coming from a person who generally hates trackpads, now I hate trackpads AND mice 😉)

From garycocs list, I use only a few apps. Maybe its better you say what you want to do with mac. Some apps may be useless for you

Like I said, for the most part I will only be using XCode for making iPhone apps. Who knows what else I might do though 😊

Apparently in Snow Leopard they are adding the capability for programs to use multi-cores!

Runs like a dream on my macs. The only app I don’t like is Dreamweaver. I’m hooked on Coda instead.
Quicksilver
Enables me to press CTRL+space and type the first couple of letters to start my apps. Keeps the dock clean.
MAMP Pro
Keeps my local development easy.
VMWare Fusion
As much as it hurts me, sometimes I need a windows workspace to test my webbapps in a bottom-of-the-foodchain browser. It’s great for most kinds of OS’s…
Logic & Garageband
As I’m a musician too, I need good recording. Logic is great. Comes with greats sounds, easy expandable.
iWork 09
When I first started using Mac I though I would need Microsoft Office. I was wrong.
VLC
Great player. Plays everything from DVDS to soundfiles.
Spotify
Great service which actually almost replaced iTunes for me. Ofcourse I got my favorite albums in iTunes for syncing with my iPhone.
Mail
Simple to use but powerful mail. The search is superfast.
Growl
Nice messages when changing a song, recieving a mail etc.

I also picked up a Mac Mini a few months back. I have been a Windows/PC guy for many years. I have a, probably around $5k desktop sitting here as well. When it comes to coding, especially for CI, I tend to stick to the desktop because of PHPDesigner. Just my choice for IDE. Coda just didn’t impress me that much. If I’m not coding though, the desktop doesn’t even get turned on. I prefer a 1.83ghz Core 2 Duo Mac Mini over a 3.6ghz Core 2 Quad PC. Sad huh? 😊

Macs are horrible for gaming, that’s why I would never go full out on a Mac… plus because of the hugely overpriced machines they are.

The Mini isn’t badly priced. $600? I know you can build a desktop for the same with better specs, but the Mini really is a nice machine.
