I also work from home and have a part time office for my bigger clients.  @ Elliot I would definitely like to work with a team, just as soon as i find a trustworthy and good one..Looks like you all are meshing well over at DOOF.

I work from home and have done for the last 5 years. At first I set my computer up in a small office in the house, but then it was difficult to invite clients inside for meetings. The dogs would jump all over them.

So moved the office into the garden - a sort of purpose built wooden building that looks like a cricket pavillion. It’s great because it means there is a professional space for clients. The walk to the office takes 20 seconds.

I do miss working in a team though.

I work from home.  It gives me the unique opportunity to get up each morning, prepare breakfast for my wife while she gets ready for work, and see her off.  Once she is off to work, my workday starts.  When she gets home, my work day stops.  I make it a policy to work only while she is at work, take the same days off and same vacation days.  That maximizes our time together and forces me to focus on work while she is away.

It works out quite well for me.  I’ve always met clients at their office or by phone.  I really haven’t had to have them over to my “office” yet.  I don’t have to be in front of my computer to pitch ideas to a client or to take notes.

Of course, we’ve got a baby on the way.  My office hours may go out the window once the baby is here.  I’ll have to figure out how to manage that.  I may have to start working part time for a bit until I get the hang of the schedule. 😊

Working from home is great, i share my space with my fiance-in-law, who is out most of the time excel training, it gives me the freedom of working at my own pace (& clients don’t seem to bother much as in the office environment 😊 )

I have been working for my old company as a php developer, so its very easy to collaborate.
I work with a really talented web-developer who’s sister lives a few minutes from my ‘office’ and we usually get together for a beer & some company gossip. I would like to recruit some more clients, but i dont think i am ready for that commitment yet, besides this one client is very generous.

I have found a HAMACHI connection to the development server + Skype screensharing works like a charm.

Thank you and goodluck to everyone sharing there thoughts on this topic.

I work from home full time.  Generally I contract for several different firms and although it can be slightly less profitable on the surface, I generally make more $ than if I were to work in a firm.  Yes, you have to pay insurance(in the US at least) and yes you have to manage your money well enough to save for retirement, but if you can do these things you will come out ahead.  I can also generally charge much more per hour - if a client doesn’t like my rate, too bad - next client.

With the environment, I prefer to be in my home, mainly because I’m one of those introverted types.  I like to blast my music or hulu or whatever while I’m working and drink coffee in my boxers and occasionally have a beer while I’m working and sometimes I’m just not making progress on a project so I chill for a couple of hours, then pick back up on it.  That kind of stuff doesn’t go over too well in an office environment.  With that said, it’s hard to find a good telecommute gig.  There are lots out there who will do it, but they want you to visit them ever few weeks or come hang out for a week to see how thing run in there shop.  If this is the case, you probably have a winner on your hands, if they want you to do a bunch of work and don’t communicate well - be weary.

I am working from home most of the time. In need I am going to client office but that’s not often. Actually, I like to work from home but I will say that it’s much much better to work in office.

Everyone in our company works from home. The designer, the sales people, the developers, everyone. We found that it makes us more productive since we are not constrained by meetings and a set block of time when we all have to be together in the same building. Some of us work better early in the morning and some work better late at night. We can all perform at our peak.

I work from home, however, I find myself to have fallen into a pattern of being lazy and not restricting myself to working during the day and more on a night, which is becoming a bad habit. Need to get out of that one pretty quick!
