Great hosting provider - does such a thing exist?

    Hi All,

I currently have 2 VPSs with PowerVPS, however they are rapidly expanding and the customer service is really suffering as a result. They just took one of my servers down due to a billing error (their fault) and then adopted a “blame the user” attitude.

I’m looking for a new provider for *relatively serious* hosting (i.e. not budget shared hosting, but not full on dedicated either…say $50-$200/month range). I really need a provider I can trust, and I’m beginning to believe that smaller providers may be the way to go. What do you think? Who do you like? love? trust? EngineHosting Pro? Others?

    Thanks fellow EE lovers,
    - i

    —EDIT——-
Here’s a summary of suggestions posted below:

    - EngineHosting: fully managed, great support, but no control panel
    - Slicehost: only if you’re unix savvy
    - Rackspace: only if you’ve got $$$
    - Godaddy: (seriously Marcus??)
    - ThePlanet & GatorHosting: for VPS/dedicated

Slicehost is great if you know what you’re doing (I don’t - my biz partner does and really likes it).

I can’t say there is really any company I trust except for EngineHosting. Nevin and the others there do an incredible job and obviously know how to serve EE better than anyone else.

If you are used to managing everything yourself via something like Plesk or WebHostManager (Cpanel) then its going to be a bit strange at first because EngineHosting handles the server management themselves.  Its truly fully managed hosting.  But that means you have a professional who knows what they are doing making changes instead of yourself.  And their support is incredibly good.

I can’t recommend them highly enough.

We have a VPS with about 25% of our clients in it, a dedicated server with about 40% of our clients in it and the rest are at EngineHosting. We choose EngineHosting for our clients with huge sites or those that have the potential to need to grow rapidly and those that need that extra dose of security and reliability.

We worked on a project last year that was funded indirectly through Homeland Security, and required us to build and maintain a relatively secure website with encrypted-only access for an international audience. We chose EngineHosting for this project and they went the extra mile for us to make sure this project went off without a hitch. EngineHosting gets our endorsement.

One thing is for sure I would NOT choose enom after this morning. Even something as simple as setting up the hosting account has taken 2 hours, 2 trouble tickets and 2 phone calls to them and I still can’t use php on the client’s account. Even accessing an html file takes like 5-6 minutes…

Some may laugh at this but I have used Godaddy a lot. I like their interface. Their support is always helpful and I have never had an issue where they were not able to fix it while I was on the phone. And I rarely have issues with their hosting. Of course it does limit you on .htaccess and other things like that. But a small price to pay for a small site.

If it is a larger site then you may want to look into hosting it on a VPS or a dedicated. In which case I would suggest gatorhosting or theplanet I have used both in the past and been pleased. Or if you are a unix scaredy cat like me then use rackspace… but their plans start at about 350$ per month…

Thanks guys! I’ve posted a summary of your recommendations in my OP.

EngineHosting sounds pretty interesting, so that’s where I’ll be looking for now.

I have about a dozen clients hosted with Engine and all I can say is the crew at Engine are great and their servers are fast and reliable. It’s now the default recommendation for any new client of mine who doesn’t have hosting set up yet. ‘Nuff said 😊

Of course, because of great competition, we could always find better hosting deals. My host is quite good for now at a cost I could easily afford.
