A Better EE Gallery: SlideShowPro Director API and displaying photos without SSP?

In my neverending quest for a better gallery - better than the way(s) it can currently be done in EE - I’m wondering if anyone has just used SSP Director (without using SSP on the front end) - strictly for managing photos. Looks like there is a full SlideShowPro Director API that can be utilized.

I’ve used Director before, and thought then (this was a while back) that it was an easy way for my clients to manage their photos, but I don’t necessarily want to have to use SSP to display the photos on the front-end of the site.

If Director can output XML or straight query results, maybe it could be used as a front for gallery management - staying entirely away from the native EE gallery and the clunky (IMHO) “weblog as gallery” method.

Just curious if anyone has done anything with Director/EE that might be a little beyond normal usage.

I have quoted on a project to do just this but I haven’t looked into it yet.

What led you to quote on a project like that? Have you seen an example in use somewhere?

This is the language on the site that piqued my interest:

Got coding skills? SlideShowPro Director offers a public API you can use to dynamically publish content for your own custom photo galleries. Fully documented and ready to go.

Sometimes positive pressure leads to all kinds of solutions!

The SSP solution part was an idea I haven’t shared yet, the final site could be created with a number of solutions.

Hi Ryan, have u managed to use the Director with your EE site? I’ve came to the same conclusion (using Director as the main gallery management and show the photos using EE).

I haven’t yet. Still debating whether it will be worth my time, but I may have to use this method on my next build.

Here’s my first attempt at a plugin to get images out of Director:

    SSP Fetch v0.5

It needs a bunch of features. I’d appreciate any suggestions.

On a similar tack I think you may be able to use Adobe Lightroom. Though it’s not hosted you can synch it with a server I think. A client of mine uses it to manage their images which get output to slideshowpro format - so there is an xml file generated that can be used in other ways too. You may well be able to get it to just output an xml file and images….

Yes, I’ve seen it mentioned 12 times so far… Don’t you think once would have been sufficient?

I have a working EE2 module for ssp director integration.

I have so far wrapped the API classes into a module with a control panel for the Director api_key and URL.

Currently have control panel working, it sets the above and returns a list of all albums.

I should have the following completed soon:

-new field type for ssp embedding
    -feild type for gallery/album selection
-plugin for templates to display images from director album/gallery with size options etc (yay! built in resizing in director)

let me know if anyone is interested in this

I posted a workaround solution for integrated SSP Director API here: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/130588/

Andrew.n’s plugin might be the cleaner solution though, so I’d check that out first: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/93790/

I am very interested - as I am sure many others are who have moved to ee2. There seems to be no other solution at the moment for albums. Please let me know.
