I’ve been thinking for quite some time now: there’s a lot of bright people and knowledge right here on this forum, what if we could somehow harness this knowledge and use this to create a kick-ass app? There’s huge potential here!

Now if only people would realize this…

I agree totally about the number of talented people using the forums.

However many of us also have commercial obligations and projects underway that prevent a lot of hobby type contribution.

Agreed. But what if you could take the ‘hobby’ factor out? What if people would get paid?

Ah, the ever-present pipe dream.

People won’t chase it down unless there is money from the get-go. Unless it’s a useful OSS app, and then maybe people will stumble your way over time.

There are alot of great developers, but I wonder how well we’d all work together. I can already imagine the wars fought over what coding conventions should be used.

i moved to django, but i am still spending a lot of time in the CI forum because simply “the lounge” is full of smart people living the web & the code - sharing ideas, thoughts, links, hints ...

from this point of view - the potential of the community is huge!!!

Overall conclusion: huge potential but that’s just what it is.

I’ve got the right attitude and a lot of will to work together (believe it or not!) to do something good. Something to spread CI across the map (along with EE).

I’ve also got a 2-year-old, a 2-week-old, and a heap of bills. So all I really can do is client work—and jump on these boards and raise hell every once in awhile.

such zero-braining excited “ideas” (what is your idea, to let bright people code your kick-ass app?) are very easy to post in a forum but hard work when it comes down to pay your monthly bills. if you have a fantastic idea for a brandnew webapp, you will find coders right here but whatfor you blame people here, when they don’t go crazy just you are a unspecified blurb.

and if your app is that big you need massive community power to realize it, CI is not the right framework. Fat-controller paradigm is okay for small projects but ... you know… 😉

@ Colin: I know, I too have to pay bills etc, but wouldn’t it be nice to work on something that could possibly return a big reward? Not saying that whatever you do will be an instant success, but if you don’t try you’re bound to fail.

@ gungbao: maybe it’s just me, but I don’t understand what you are saying. I know it’s not positive, but it’s pretty incoherent.

Ah…directly out of the “for the social good” play book.  It’s interesting that you set a one sided expectation and then don’t understand why folks won’t play along with you.

As folks have repeatedly advised you Codex, you’ve failed to answer the WIIFM question. Oh, WIIFM = What’s In It For Me.  Not me, but everyone that might be remotely interested in any “unspecified blurb” as gungbao called this.  I, for one, thought gungbao’s post was ultimately clear (given that English is not the primary language).

For a real world example, I just terminated a contract in which I was “dedicated and determined, focused on the goal, and delivered on every promise I made”.  But I terminated the contract because the other party never paid me.

Most folks just don’t have time for dreams Codex.  Please don’t be disappointed.

Understand, this post was not meant as a ‘who wants to work for me’ kind of thing. It was meant as ‘is it possible to achieve something good when we all work together?’. I guess people didn’t understand that, and maybe I wasn’t clear about it.

I was kind of like Codex for a while, really wanted to get into the open source projects and start something up. Still do, but now that I’m working a 40 hour a week job and soon to head off to college I really understand where everyone else is coming from. I really only have time for my personal projects. If I do start a “community” project I’m hoping to help Elliot with his Blaze CMS, that is if hes still doing it and wants some contribution. It has quite an amazing setup.

The funny thing is that a lot of people offered to help Elliot develop Blaze, including me. Unfortunalely, development seems to have grinded to a halt. Not to get personal, but Elliot never commented on why Blaze has gone cold, which I personally think is rude. I reckon there’s a good reason for it, but still…

And yet you are still hoping to help. I basically ask the same question (same intention anyways) and I get ‘no’, ‘not interested’, ‘keep dreaming’.
