The headphones certainly fly off when I get to where I really need to focus on a string of complex logic. I also failed to mention 2 very important things:
1. Pencil and notebook.
2. The CodeIgniter User Guide

1. Music in the background, usually smth non distracting like Explosions in the Sky or whatever. Or iTunes’ party shuffle… Like Colin, the music goes on pause though if I need to concentrate.
2. Program wise I’ve got E-text editor, Ipswitch FTP and Heide SQL running. And Firefox offcourse with the needed tabs, most of the time a tab with the site I’m working on, a tab for the user guide, one for the forums if I need to ask smth and then a last tab for checking the php documentation or looking up smth in the xhtml reference on w3schools (if I’m doing xhtml).
3. Most often I’ll have a bottle of water by my side, but sometimes some diet coke or Schweppes Agrum.

Well, I guess I did fail to mention one particular friend while coding. All of you know this one if you have viewed my Drunken CodeIgniter tutorial - Coors Light.
Never on a clients work though!

@Michael Wales : “never on a client work”. Yeah right

@Grahack - Akira perhaps? I watched Ghost In The Shell the other day. That was an odd film.

No, it was Solaris. Now Akira could be a good coding soundtrack, like Philipp Glass or Steve Reich are.

The point is, all of us like music as friend while coding.
Why music? m…. many reasons about that. But rembember : Don’t play music that you know all the lyrics. Cause you’ll sing when you type line per line. (Depend on Consentration).

Notebook on table with gel pen!
Music in background (soft alternative)
PHP Expert editor (the best editor for php with SFTP support)
Console window :D
There are nothing can be really useful anymore..

Music. And I take breaks every now and then to go smoke and clear my head. I’m not big on coffee….even though I drink lots of fluid, mostly water.
I guess that tiny second of mental shift from coding to drinking water helps a bit.
Cant think of anything else.

Another one for me is a bit of blue tac rolling around in my free hand.

Yes - I have to have a notebook nearby and it has to be a gel pen. I absolutely hate ball point pens!
I have a tendency to write out my databases before I actually create them - whether it be on the notebook or in Notepad. I have to have it all planned out.

I’ve tried to listen to music while coding, doesn’t seem to work for me. Actually, I really don’t notice the silence once I get focused enough, at that point music only distracts me.
That said, I like:
-A good fan (in the summer)
-Usual development enviornment (xampp, kate editor, firefox)
-maybe a book to read if I get bored from coding
Yea, not the most exciting stuff, but there’s not much to do when you don’t got no Internets.

hehe, I recognize that. When I pause my music if I need to focus I often forget to turn it back on for like an hour or so…
