Will probably still have some use though I guess. Mainly for people who don’t upgrade and also for those that just purchased one of the 1.6.x branch as I guess it won’t just be forgotten about immediately?
Best wishes,
Mark

{refers to the boyink book : Building and EE site}
I bought the book. Its more of an extended tutorial than anything else.
There is very little explanation as to WHY you would do anything, and it is a guide rather than an explanation.
If you want a book to explain why or how EE works this is not the book, i hoped it was, but its not.
If you want a very concise and detailed tutorial this will probably fit your needs.
But yet again, no one has managed to actually explain how or why EE works in certain ways. Providing examples is great, but no one has yet to explain why. It falls into the same trap as the official EE documentation. It explains nothing. It provides examples, but fails completely on the how or why you would use or implement.

@Flatulent Badger – Have you watched Ryan Irelan’s screencasts at Pragmatic? They have filled in some gaps for me, providing a little more of the “why” that you are seeking.

@ingmar so when can we expect a the 2.0 version ?
This summer, as per the FAQ:
Q: When will ExpressionEngine 2.0 be released?
A: ExpressionEngine 2.0 will be released in the summer of 2008.

Information on book now online
Building Websites With ExpressionEngine 1.6

I took a look, and didn’t find it listed on Amazon. Any idea if they will be doing this?
And to the people who think this book may be made obsolete as soon as it is out of the gate, EE 2.0 is supposed to be reverse compatible (though I imagine there will be some issues). My point is if you set up a good 1.6 site the hope will be that it will carry over.

Hi Christopher,
Not sure if they will have it on Amazon or not, I could ask them though. With the book being obsolete I also don’t think that will be true either as lots and lots of people will still be using the 1.6.x branch as you say and this book could be quite helpful for them.
Anyway I’m sure the publishing company will probably just roll out a 2.0 version when the time comes anyway!! 😉
Best wishes,
Mark

Some more news for anyone interested. I’ve just heard that the book from Packt Publishing will be available on Amazon a few days after it is released so there’s another way to get it as well.
Best wishes,
Mark

Hello everyone,
Thanks for all the interest in the book! I just wanted to confirm that the book Mark has been referring to (Building Websites for ExpressionEngine 1.6) is now out and available on Amazon.com/Amazon.co.uk, or directly from the publisher (http://www.packtpub.com/building-websites-with-expressionengine-1.6/book). You can get a dead-tree version or a PDF version.
I am the author and as Mark says, it’s definitely aimed at beginners or new users. Yes, it’s written for 1.6, but if you’re a new user on 1.6 you probably don’t want to wait until 2.0 is released anyway.
I look forward to hearing about what you think!

Hi Leonard,
Well I think you already know what I think of the book 😉
Should be an excellent resource for anyone new to ExpressionEngine, there are even items in there that even a seasoned Pro could learn from!
Hope it does really well for you.
Best wishes,
Mark

Was there any EE site to promote the book, that might be a good idea, along with some sample content and maybe even bonus content 😉

I would reccomend EE to have one user guide for Beginners and one general. The beginner one should be just really basic information that makes even a noobie to web design comfortable with EE. You can have a bit of CSS and HTMl info too in there.
I know people most people have problems with understanding the basic concepts EE and once they get it it it seems to be easy. I would say thats just beacuse of how the basics are written in the user guide. If the basics are the hardest, why not have a few more examples and a few more pages explaining it in the user document. In the user doucment, it looks like the basic and the advanced areas have been given equal emphasis.
Anyway, thats just a suggestion.

I have a site at http://www.leonardmurphy.com/book that has sample content and code that you can copy and paste as you work through the book. It prob won’t mean much without the book though! As I get feedback, if there are mistakes (hopefully not!), updates, etc, I’ll put them on my site. The code is also downloadable at www.packtpub.com/support
The book is aimed at beginners - it does have really basic information including on HTML and CSS and how to get that all working in harmony with EE. Note that EE is the focus of the book so the HTML is deliberately not fancy. If you’d like to get a feel for my style, you can see my original tutorials at http://www.leoandmeg.com/welcome/tutorial

Hi there,
i got a copy of your book Leonard and am about writing a review (in my native language german + one in engl.). I only had a brief look yet but it seems it is the book i missed 1 year back when i started learning EE. It would have saved me hours of (frustration) reading through the (scattered) docs and searching the forum.
I wonder why the EE team is not promoting the book? Could not find a note on it on their blog - or did i miss that?
However, EE is pretty “simple” and elegant once one caught the basics. Anyway, i can advise anybody starting with EE buying the book, it simply saves you a lot of time.
Congrats Leonard!
(+ pilot Mark 😊
