When you’re talking about your site and won’t mention the real URL, please use example.com. Or example.net. Or example.org. Do not use:

    mysite.com
    mycompany.com
    myclient.com
    site1.com
    site2.com
    primarydomain.com
    secondarydomain.com
    anything.com
    invalid.com
    nosuchsite.com

or anything else along these line: they are all taken. The “example” domains are the only ones set aside specifically (RFC 2606, for you geeks) for testing purposes. Thanks for listening.

Ingmar has a point, I have clicked on ‘placebo’ links a few times.  It’s annoying.

Use *.tld and all your problems go away.

    google.tld
    yahoo.tld
exp-consulting.tld (when is that relaunch coming, btw?)
    cia.gov.tld

Don’t use .dev, that’s what I use for my local testing 😊 .

Just wondering cause it’s been a few months.

And yet I’ve had no luck starting up a breeding business.

    Problem: Pet peeve: use example.com
    Solution: Don’t click on it?

Or are you referring to something else entirely?

The point is this: First of all, it’s not correct. But that’s beside the point, really. Secondly, and more importantly, I don’t want to have to figure out if that is meant literally, or as a generic example. ourcompany.com? Could be both. example.org? Generic. We recently had an issue with meinedomain.de (“mydomain”). Anyway, I clearly said “pet peeve”.

    Now I gotcha!
I’ll admit, it is troublesome trying to understand when someone asks for help and they link to a generic name as you mention.
It really is easier for those offering the help and support if the user asking for help does that, and links to http://www.example.com and not http://www.mysite.com

On the other hand, the chances of someone here in the forums actually having one of those generics registered are probably slim to none. I know I don’t take anything as real if it isn’t unique. Not to say Ingmar that your suggestion is a good one.

It’s worth noting that the User Guide uses example.com for all URLs, email addresses, etc, for this very reason; as web developers, this is just another way that we can be good netizens.
