I wasn’t aware that you can install IE on a Mac without running BootCamp, Parallels, VMWare but you can using Darwine. IE runs in an X11 window. It’s a little slow and I haven’t managed to get any of the transparent PNG methods to work (Edit-Add: no DirectX support in Darwine yet) but other than that it seems to work just fine…at least with the limited time I’ve used it. It seems I’m even slower than you PX. I saw that program yonks and yonks ago but it just won’t install on my MacBook Pro. I’ve tried absolutely everything but just nothing will allow them to load in. Oh well, back to http://browsershots.org I suppose!! :down:

I also tried this a while back on MBP but had problems with sessions and conditional comments. I also found that the X11 windowing made it very slow so back to Parallels, the 25GB XP image and the Tredosoft solution..

You can run it really easily using Codeweavers Crossover too. I think that uses a version of wine/darwine.

Unfortunately tried everything listed on the net to try and get this working but no joy here :down:

May wipe my whole system one day soon as I need to get it running back to speed again. It’s really fast when it gets going but can take a while to start up. I’m one for trying out every little productivity gem in the world!! 😊

I’m personally going to try and break into Microsoft and delete every snippet of code pertaining to it so they will either give in on creating such terrible products or they would have to re-write the whole code-base again 😉!!!

I’ve got two installs of XP in Parallels, one for IE6 and one for IE7.  Windows auto-update was on (I had forgotten to turn it off), and now my IE6 XP install just keeps rebooting over and over.

Being a web designer means you get to experience all the joys of Windows, even if you choose a different platform.  :roll:

Install IE7 and then use Multiple IEs to run IE6 and 5, 5.5 if you need to.

I’ve tried that and had all kinds of problems.  I figure it’s easier just to keep them sandboxed - and really because you can’t see under the hood it’s hard to know if it is really rendering using the IE5.5 engine or not (for example).  Maybe that’s just my paranoid nature getting the best of me though 😉

Or is that bad form.

I have been involved with a couple of projects that were geared towards member-only content.  The head developer did a browser detect and did not support M$ products other than IE 7….This was stated in the terms of service though…

I’m beginning to think the latter.

I’d say that’s definately bad form. Very tempting to do things like that tho, especially when you are stuck in the middle of a pig of a debug session in IE, with your ‘Gates’ voodoo doll looking like a pin cushion.

Actually, wait a minute I’ve re-read your code. I thought you were just showing that message to IE users, and nothing else. But if you are still showing the site, just adding a warning that IE will probably be munging it up then fair enough.

You could put Opera on your download list, a lovely browser.
