I’m an old dog trying to learn new tricks. Figure that I can no longer keep up with the kids on the basketball court but I can at least try to keep pace in this arena. Actually, I have a business and also want an online presence that’s more than a static, digital brochure with occasional updates.
Started in the WYSIWYG world with the usual fare - iWeb, Shutterbug, RapidWeaver and trials of others (e.g., Freeway, Flux, etc.).
Then I explored the weblog option because of it’s updating flexibility and reviewed the standard candidates. WordPress seemed to be a safe bet but then I began to recognize the potential of a CMS solution.
If more choices are a better, then I’ve been worn thin by a good thing. How anyone has time to appraise all the available CMS options will remain a mystery to me (http://www.cmsmatrix.org/). Looking at all that’s been created with open source systems, that seemed a safe bet. And considering the price tag, how could you lose? A friend is a Drupal zealot and has done some nice work. I was ready to follow his lead but I kept stumbling across Mac-related sites that used ExpressionEngine and couldn’t help but wonder why they didn’t opt for the free ride. A couple of articles at Mac360.com helped put things in perspective so I started looking at some of the fee-based choices. Squarespace looked appealing in terms of learning curve but of course, it sacrifices something to achieve that goal. Then I noticed the plans for a release of EE v.2.0. I suspect EllisLab could miss the mark and create something that’s more difficult to use but in light of their interaction with their user community, that outcome seems doubtful.
So, despite my inexperience and an ISP (SiteGround) that has virtually no resources dedicated to EE, I was able to get my trial version installed so I can start exploring. Purchased a Beginning CSS book (Simon Collison) and CSSEdit. Now I just need a hand-holding guide for creating an EE site (hint, hint, nudge, nudge).
And more free time.
Please keep me on your mailing list for those free-time giveaways.
I’ll opt for Print version.
Thanks.

Gee looks like a lot of lurkers were lured into the limelight. But then again the series was really helpful and I would love to win a PDF version of the book…

New user to EE, and I’d benefit greatly from this. Already checking out the site, but I’d love a printed copy for my own personal reference!
Cheers!

How cool is that? Regardless of whether I win a copy of the book (pdf or printed copy is fine with me), your offer reminds me of the ‘old days’ of the internet a little bit. You know,... when you bumped into people from all over the world for the first time, when their excitement of this new world got you excited and everyone paid it forward. You don’t have to help new users like this, but you do it anyway, knowing that the world is a little richer as a result of your actions. Must be in your DNS,.. er, I mean DNA.

I could really use this book! I’ve just installed EE for the third time, and I never can seem to get off the dime to start using it. Conceptually, I love the system’s architecture, but I’ve just never gotten the hang of admin, templates, etc. I can get a complex Joomla site up and running in a couple of days, but I’d rather use EE.
Oh, and I’ll take the PDF, please! 😉

That would be pretty special to get a copy of the pdf, I’ve been curious about Expression Engine for a while now. Feed me.
