thriva, I was having the same problems with wizard.php earlier, but it appears to be working now.  The problems before seemed to be some sort of server error; are you able to login now? You might ask your host if they had any outages earlier.

thriva, I have to agree with Lisa. We’ve seen some weird things happening with wizard.php not loading, then loading again. Wizard.php has nothing to do with EE per se. It just checks out some things having to do with PHP. There is a MySQL portion to it that comes later in the script.

Also find out if your site is on a server with lots of other sites. That could also be a problem.

Lisa, Sue, What a lovely morning it is here… although frosty and very very cold.

Lisa, I emailed you the id and password just now, but then thought I should check my site. I noticed that I wasn’t logged in which I had been last night. I went to the login page and entered my details, hit submit and sighed heavily as the now familiar white screen appeared. Went back to the site’s homepage in order to sigh again… but noticed that I was now logged in. Went back to system page and I was in!!!! So interested to know what you did and whether it could be tweaked to perfection.

I know my site has suffered from a fair amount downtime and it is something I have raised with my host. They said they were aware of the issue and were working on it.

Sue, I now have a long list of things to ask my host… I’ve been saving them up for a phone call ‘cause the last time I emailed them it took four days and three follow-up emails to get a satisfactory reply. I know I share the server with others but how many is too many? ...and what kind of problems would arise?

    Thanks

    update:

Tried to get in again and couldn’t. Tried a third time and could (once I’d gone back to the home page first).

This is similar behaviour to what I had at the beggining.

Hm- well, the server wizard is working again, so that’s a plus.  We’re still digging into this one, so hang tight.

OK- I got in and set a cookie domain.  Logged out, cleared cookies, and could log back in ok.

Something is still goofy- that white screen shouldn’t happen even w/the cookie issue.  So, let me brainstorm that.  But for the moment, can you try clearing cookies again- then log in.  See if it works for you.

Just as a note: I did absolutely nothing to your site, other than re-upload those few test files and view them several dozen times with varying levels of success.  Let us know if the cookie changes that Robin made helped. =)

    Hello Robin and Lisa,

I cleared cookies and then tried to log in. Got white screen. Went back to home page to see if I was logged in and I was. Returned to system page and got a white screen (not login). Refreshed and finally got in.

Did this a few times and sometimes I got in and sometimes I didn’t. Odd!

We’re all leaning toward problems on the server side making things quirky.  The fact the wizard wouldn’t work is a good indication of that.  So are intermittent problems w/ no changes on EE’s end of things.

We’re still brainstorming- but I’m thinking the hosting is having a lot to do with the current issues.

Let’s be blunt. Four days and three follow-up emails is not what I’d call a good service. I’d seriously consider changing hosts.

Having said that, I recommend EngineHosting.

The problems with shared hosting with too many accounts can be things like slow responses, other sites using up server resources, time outs, etc.

I’m certainly considering it but I pay annually and have 9 months left to run.

Well I can’t log in at all. I thought with clearing cookies I might be able to muddle through but today I got my first lot of fresh spam, and I cannot delete it… I’m really upset. Looks like I’ll have to make that decision whether to change hosts or drop EE.

The symptoms you’ve exhibited, (and have been seen by 3 tech support staff and one developer) can really only lead us to 1 conclusion, that the host is simply not able to handle a dynamic site such as EE.  I’m sorry, and I know its a tough choice, but I’d have to conclude that EE can not be run in your current environment reliably.

Thanks for everyone’s help. I’ve found myself a new host, recommended on this board and based in the UK. They’re offering exactly what I want and so I hope to be up and running with EE soon.
Thanks again and have a Happy Christmas!
