Never ever use 1and1… horrible hosting service. I think the only host worse than 1and1 is GoDaddy.

I don’t doubt that 1and1’s hosting is pretty awful on their managed servers and shared hosting accounts.

However, the root package is a whole different beast. You can do whatever you want with it. If it turns out to be bad, it is your fault!

I view it as cheap co-location.

Dedicated on crap equipment can still be bad hosting no matter what sort of account you have.

True, very true. Still, no problems yet (fingers crossed now!).

I have VPS through eapps (eapps.com). So far the best I’ve found. You can host multiple domains, root access, root SSH access, ability to upgrade apps through the Virtuosso Control Panel. I’m currently on PHP 5.2, MySQL 5.0.45, 1.5 GB and 20 GB transfer monthly for $10 a month. I haven’t found a better deal. Great support from Atlanta, GA. They also support ROR. I’ve also implemented several CI sites easily sharing the same CI system folder.

I’m about to sign up for Dreamhost in the next 24 hours. If anyone wants the affiliate thing, post your URL or whatever…

    Hi,

I use Trexhost. The support is great and they don’t oversell. i have a reseller’s acct there ($19.99/mo) and everyone that I have referred have loved them too. They’re very reasonably priced too.

    Happy Holidays!

As I’ve said in another thread - I’m also willing to host a few people on my own Dedicated box.

No real limits. Offers Tomcat servlets, Apache 2.2.6, PHP5.2.5, suPHP (so you don’t have to deal with ownership issues), Ruby1.8.6+rails2.0.2, MySQL 5.0.45.

    Cost: Nothing.
    Catches: None

The server info itself can be found here: http://www.awpti.org/hosting/

Let me know if I can help you out.

That’s an really good offer, only thing is I can’t setup my site yet, too much to do. The last thing I need is another distraction. I’m planning of doing it this summer. So I wouldn’t want to waste a space of your kind offer which some else could put to good use.

I use mediatemple. Go for it. I switched 12 providers in one year due to digg effects. MT has excellent support and very good plans. I’ve heard good things about dreamhost as well.
