    I have just installed EE and have a blank control panel.  The main index of the site shows up just fine, but the control panel is not working at all.

    I installed it once already, and BOTH the site and the control panel were blank.  After going through all the suggestions I could find, I finally deleted everything and started over.  This time only half of the problem is fixed.

    I have forced error reporting, and I get the following error:

    Warning: main(): Unable to access ../system/core/core.system.php in /var/www/vhosts/heatherkate.com/httpdocs/system/index.php on line 8

    Warning: main(../system/core/core.system.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/vhosts/heatherkate.com/httpdocs/system/index.php on line 8

    Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required '../system/core/core.system.php' (include_path='.:') in /var/www/vhosts/heatherkate.com/httpdocs/system/index.php on line 8

    (I have replaced the new system name with “system” for this post.)

    I am all out of brain cells now, and still don’t have a working control panel, and a funky website for the moment.

    Thank you for your help!

    EE isn’t able to access your core.system.php file- which shouldn’t be a problem.  I’m almost wondering if your ftp is being funky and corrupting files- what are you using?  And you’re uploading everything but images in ASCII format- correct?  I’m leaning that way because: 1. re-uploading fixed the frontend; 2. there’s really not much else that could jam up finding the core file unless it just didn’t get uploaded.

    For a quick attempt at a fix- go in, delete the whole core folder, upload a fresh copy.  Let’s see where that gets us.

    Thank you for your reply, Robin.  I use Dreamweaver CS3 to ftp my files.  I almost ALWAYS have difficulty installing new web-based software.  I follow directions well, and I feel like I am well-versed in what I do, but these installations give me a headache.  I’m wishing I had just paid the installation fee.

    I am not sure what format the files upload with, because I haven’t found a place in Dreamweaver to specify that.  I need to find a better ftp client.

    I will re-do the core folder and see what happens.

    That did not work.  I dumped the core folder and uploaded it fresh, and no change—same error message.  Did I overlook a permissions change on that folder?

    I am going to see if my iMac has a different ftp client I can use.

    I would highly recommend not using Dreamweaver for your FTPs, it is almost certainly why you experience problems. For the Mac, I personally use and recommend Transmit; but that is a personal preference. =)

    Yea!  I switched to Transmit and everything uploaded fine.  HOWEVER…after I restored my db files from the trial version, the style sheet on the control panel is not working, and I can’t log in anymore.  Content is all there, but I can’t log in.  Maybe I wasn’t supposed to transfer ALL of the db files??

    The site appears, and is definitely being displayed dynamically, but I just can’t log in.  I DID log in right after the initial upload, and the cp worked fine. The problem occurred after I moved the db files over.  I’ll go searching through the forum.

    It’s likely a cookie issue- and the cp is a path issue.  Let’s override those settings in the config- then you can change them via the cp after you log in and pull them out of the config.

    So- using the good new ftp program, go in and grab your system/config.php file.  Open it up and add the following config values:

    $conf['theme_folder_url'] = "http://mysite.com/themes/";
    $conf['cookie_domain'] = ".mysite.com";
    $conf['admin_session_type'] = "c";

    Those will override what’s in the database- sub in correct info.  Upload the modified file- chmod 666.  Clear you cookies- see if you can login.

    Okay, that sort of worked.  I can log in now, but the style sheet is still not being used.  All I see is the HTML in the cp.  What’s next?

    Let’s see- you uploaded the themes folder so it’s on the same level as the EE system folder- correct?

    Then go to ‘Admin- System Prefs- General Config’ and edit:
    URL to your “themes” folder
    Theme Folder Path

    Go to ‘Admin- System Prefs- Control Panel’ and edit:
    Default Control Panel Theme

    In ‘My Account- Customize Control Panel’ select a theme.

    Pull down your config.php and remove the $conf[‘theme_folder_url’] = “http://mysite.com/themes/”;

    Let’s see if that gets you themed.  Once it does- I’d check the cookie settings in ‘Admin- System Prefs’, set those properly- and pull the extra cookie related info out of the config.  That way it will be handled by the db instead.

    There’s our problem.  In the customize cp section, there is no dropdown or choice for the theme.  it just says:
    Control Panel Theme
    Choose Control Panel Theme
    without a place to choose.

    I have to pick up my son from school, and I may not get back to this for a while.  VERY anxious to fix it though.

    Thanks for your help and I’ll be back later!

    It’s just not finding the themes.  What I’d do- rename the current themes folder themes_bk then upload a fresh copy.  Triple check the paths one more time.

    If that doesn’t do it- could be an open_base restriction or something- those can be worked around via using Masking access- to get the cp on the same level as the themes folder.  I seem to recall slightly different behavior in such a case, so I’m still betting on a path issue.  But I throw it out as a possibility to explore once we’ve exhausted the more likely options.

    Okay I did that.  It doesn’t work.  When I change the path in the gen. config. panel to the themes_bk folder, it automatically changes is back to themes.  But I know without a doubt the themes folder is also still there.  Should I have changed the themes to themes_bk in the config file?  I’ll try that too.  This seems so strange to me.

    I’m not sure I’m getting it all right.  Please give me a list of all the places I need to check the themes path.

    Ok, I think I understand. Robin was asking you to make a backup of the themes folder then upload a full, fresh copy, just called “themes” - not rename the existing path.

    So, in the same directory as path.php, do you have a /themes/ folder? What is inside of it? And please make sure any changes you’ve made are now changed back to point at /themes/.

    Forgive my confusion.  I have done what you suggested, and still no change.  I’ve corrected the paths throughout.  The /themes/ folder is in the same directory as path.php and the system folder.  Inside of the themes/ folder are the other themes folders like site_themes, cp_themes, etc., each with their individual files contained therein.  Everything LOOKs correct.

    Is there any other path somewhere I’ve overlooked?

    P.S.  Once again, I’m leaving to pick up another child, so my response will be delayed.

    Before we continue, I need to know what version and build you’re on. You can find those at the bottom of your control panel. =)
