What they both really lack is an actual community.

I completely disagree! We have Facebook and MySpace and all of those websites. We can join forums, sign up for alt porn communities, join online writing groups. The internet is packed full of communities. For me, Twitter’s (and, to a lesser degree, spammy Pownce’s) appeal lies in its simplicity. You sign up, you write what’s going on in your life or what you’re doing right now. You occasionally reply to people (or, if you’re like me, you have obnoxious conversations that last for ten tweets; I like the ability to reply to a note on Pownce), but you are largely on your own out there, with just your friends.

Do we really need another ‘community’ site?

Pownce and Twitter are both great if you already have friends, but they suck if you’re wanting to make new ones.

I started off with Crimson on Pownce and Twitter. I now have 10 friends and 11 fans on Pownce—I had more fans, but I’m fairly sure a few people deleted me when I wouldn’t friend them back—and 21 friends and an additional 6 followers on Twitter. I wouldn’t say that you can’t make new friends on those programs.

Fans and followers are just fancy words for stalker.

Just ‘cause they’re stalkers doesn’t mean it’s not a community.

The social networking craze is interesting but a little weird to me. I mean really, do you need that much info about your friends? Do we really need to be that connected?

I’m not sure that community websites are about you knowing about your friends as much as you being the star of your own little corner of the internet.

Eh, I sign up for everything, but rarely use them. Twitter is fun favorite, mostly because of the public timeline feature, so you can look for interesting people. I can barely look at Myspace, the design is just so offensive 😊, while facebook has actually produced some professional contacts, as has LinkedIn.

This thread is all about inviting total strangers to Pownce so why not add them to the buddy list as well?

But, seriously, if people don’t want to share that kind of information it should be their business. Some people use these avenues for more than meeting random people. I use Pownce and Twitter to quickly inform people when something is up (or for weird drunken ranting, or to just be obnoxious), not for making friends. I do stumble across the occasional interesting person, but I mostly keep to people that I know from other places. I completely understand where you’re coming from, and I hope that you understand my point of view, too.

There is no prerequisite or expectations and I do understand your point.  My counterpoint is that Pownce allows you to specifically choose who and what you send to people.  I can make an ExpressionEngine group and send out a message saying something to the effect of “I really need someone who can bust out a quick contract job for me or simply help me out for a few hours” and I have a relevant audience that will get the notification.  Only the ExpressionEngine group would get the message and this sort of need might be best served by having as many ExpressionEngine friends as possible.  The same goes for other groups that I might have.

People are hard to read on forums.  Things that we would say over a beer don’t have the same effect when said on a forum.  Often much gets lost in translation.  I just had to make sure.  😉
