    Hello,

I’m starting a project for a client and I can choose the provider I recommend to them. Just curious what others’ experience has been with various providers. While supporting various clients, I’ve seen some good and many more bad providers so I’d like to make a good choice for this one.

For example, the support hours and expertise on a lot of them seems to be lacking. Also, a lot of them don’t have 24x7 support.

What I’m looking for is something that’s developer friendly, has 24x7 support and supports latest version of PHP. I’m shocked at how many still support PHP 4 by default and force you to jump through hoops to get PHP 5 support.

Looking forward to seeing people’s feedback

For example, one client uses 1x1 hosting and I’ve been very disappointed in their Cpanel interface and support in general.

Several years ago I used FatCow and remembered them being pretty decent.

I like BitLab now, but I’ve used a ton of different hosts in the past - most of the big ones do have OK customer service.

+1 for Linode if a VPS is what you’re after.

We host all our clients at Leaseweb. Good service, professional, reasonable priced, very fast connections and presence in both the US and Europe.

No experience with web hosting though, we only do VPS’ses or dedicated servers.

I use MDD Hosting. They use litespeed servers, which made a noticable difference in the speed of my websites. They have cPanel, fast response to support issues, php 5.3, and good prices. I have had both shared hosting and semi-dedicated hosting accounts with them, and am very pleased.

+ 1 for MDD hosting, I use a VPS from them to run one of my clients site based on CI. Awesome service, they handled all the server issues to make it PCI compliant brilliantly. If your are looking for VPS you can also check out KnownHost and ServInt. They are known to be the among the best in the VPS category.

We use rackspace cloud server (not cloud sites) for $10/month you have your own ‘box’ and they run well, you can easily point-click upgrade to a massive machine..  One of our clients has 1M+ page views monthly on it for about $300/m

They also give you a good sized free cloud file (like amazon S3)

Hey just curious why engine hosting has not been mentioned? It is after all a part of the Ellis labs network.

I have been shopping around as well for when my current hosting term is up and engine hosting was one I was curious about.

I’ve been a customer of DreamHost for a few years now. They price is great, unlimited everything, and the speed of their servers is awesome.

The company is also wicked transparent, their status site/blog/twitter feed keeps you up to date on everything their doing and also if there is any problems or planned down time on the server your using.

Anybody have anymore input on this?

I was ideally looking for a company which offered both hosting and VPS. If my site takes off I could look at moving to VPS rather than having to pay the extra $ first.

Host Gator offers both hosting and VPS but Linode gets better reviews for its VPS.

Media Temple has a mix of good and bad reviews. I cannot work out if there have substituted decent hosting for a lovely website.
