Many of our community members are submitting panels for SXSW this coming year. Having never been to SXSW, (What?! It’s true. I know. I hear it’s fabulous And.All.That.) I’m hoping to make it this coming year to see first-hand the chaos and splendid educational discussions that occur there.

Seeing the panels come up on Twitter, connected with a “go vote for this!” gave me an idea: Why not promote our community member’s panels here in our forums? I’ve heard so many of you speak at various events like EECI, I know that I, personally, want to see more people exposed to what you have to say.

So if you’re submitting a panel and would like to share it with our community, please promote it in this forum thread. Without sounding too cheesy, I hope to see you all speak this year. I always learn so much from you.

We’re pleased to be part of a proposed panel entitled Technomadism - Living/Working Full-Time on the Road.

We hope to cut our mooring lines and head out in late September for a year on the road full time as a family.  You can follow those efforts at http://boyinks4adventure.com.

At this point it looks like if the panel is chosen, I’ll be there.  It it isn’t I’ll take a bye year on SXSW as we will probably closer to the West Coast by the time it happens in March and would rather save a travel budget for EECI 2011.

“Connecting Concept to Code: Tips for Designer/Developers”

Are you a front-end developer looking for a deeper understanding of that design you’re implementing? Are you a web designer trying to wrap your head around front-end code? If so, this talk is for you. Co-led by a designer and a developer, this session will connect the “why” of design theory with the “how” of front-end implementation in a rapid-fire, back-and-forth format. We’ll hit the topics of web typography, colors on screen, webpage visual hierarchy, grid systems, and making the logo bigger. Because everything is bigger in Texas.

These all sound terrific. Voted, voted, and voted. Also, Michael, I’m going to try to keep tabs on your technomadism talk whether or not I attend SX. I’ve always felt I wasn’t taking full advantage of my office independence. Great idea for a panel.

The panel I’ve got in the picker is a co-presentation with my colleague Doug Gapinski. We work exclusively with clients in higher ed, and we’ve noticed more and more schools wanting (and needing) to integrate social media into their main sites. We often try to push them a step further and get them to think about other ways to use existing outside resources, hence our presentation “MashED UP: Mashups & Higher Ed.” It eases the unfamiliar into the concept of a mashup through everyday examples (c.f. spork, clock radio), gives an overview of what’s already out there, and ends with some direction on making your own. Pretty fun stuff and hopefully a good resource for people inside and outside the .edu world.
