Hello there, sorry to have to start a topic with the same name as many others…but I just don’t know what to do…

I have just bought the newest version of EE, uploaded everything “as is” to my new shared hosting provider and tried to install with no luck

I get the message “Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.” when I try to open the system folder in my browser

I’m not sure how to check the Zend Optimizer version, I have cpanel and here’s the other info that is probably needed:

    Apache version 2.2.15
    PHP version 5.2.13

    thanks in advance

I am having this same issue. I have verified that the files have been uploaded properly and that the file permissions have been set where required.

When I enter the path of the system directory (which I’ve renamed, though I’ve tried it both ways) I just get the error.

This is a paid, commercial license.

    Current Version: 2.1.0 - Build: 20100712

I have the same issue. I am using EngineHosting. Straight upload, no modification to anything and this error message “Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.”

EDIT : I reuploaded everything a third time and now it looks like it wants to work…

You have a valid license, there is no need for Zend Optimizer. The PHP files are completely unencrypted. Is this a new setup? In that case please be sure to follow the installation instructions in detail.

Please make sure to get a fresh set of files, there was a hotfix earlier today.

I downloaded about one hour ago and have followed the instructions to the letter up to this point.

I downloaded the newest version again just now, re-uploaded everything as it is, changed the permissions like it says in the installation instructions and now I get the following message:

Your system folder path does not appear to be set correctly. Please open the following file and correct this: index.php

I didn’t rename the system folder, everything is intact as it is there

I saw this error before install, downloaded a fresh version and I am getting the same message: Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.

Just thought I’d chime in that I’m having the same issue. Permissions are correct, url is correct. Note: the issue is appearing for me locally with MAMP.

I tried installing in a second, different environment, and had the same issue (installed locally instead of remotely).

I was able to get a local install working yesterday in the same environment.

I have the same issue. Copied all files to the server, pointed the browser to the correctly renamed system directory and EE says: „Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.“. What can I do?

UPDATE: It’s really boring. I uploaded the “fresh set of files” now four times and went through the correct installation instructions. Four times. No win.

For what it’s worth, I’m having the exact same problem.

Just downloaded the latest 2.1 commercial build. Uploaded it to EngineHosting. Followed the install docs to the letter.

I get “Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.” when trying to go to the site’s home page.

I get “Your system folder path does not appear to be set correctly. Please open the following file and correct this: index.php” when trying to get to the CP.

I have confirmed that /index.php and /system/index.php have system path set correctly. I get these errors even if I rename the system folder.

I’m having the same problem. Downloaded about an hour ago.

UPDATE: I retrieved an older download (ExpressionEngine2.0.2_PB1), uploaded all files and the installing worked instantly. Must have something to do with this latest release.

I trying to install this on MAMP on my local machine.

Same issue. All fresh files but no luck getting beyond this message:

Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.

I should note though that I’m updating from the 1.0 branch which requires the “backed-up” config file to be uploaded.

Upload the backed up copy of config.php to system/expressionengine/config/.

Any advise would be very welcome.
