Made a mistake…if I remove both at the same time I receive a 404 page not found error. So I’m assuming that means the error is not with my host?

Update…
despite having closed registrations completely I am once again getting unwanted people registering on my site. They follow the same username dynamics as I mentioned above. Not coincidentally, my forum has started working again through no intervention of my own. I think it’s safe to say that these two occurrences are linked.

Have you tried user banning?
CP Home › Admin › Members and Groups › User Banning
Set the Banned Email Address to *@yahoo.com

Thanks Sue but would that really be a solution? If turning registration off doesn’t stop them from registering then why would banning there domain? I will do it but I’d ideally like to find how they’re getting in in the first place and what was done to my forum. Any ideas in this regard are greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike,
It appears you still have member registration enabled for HPCsport, so any human or bot can add /member/register to the URL and create an account from there.
I don’t know that there’s a correlation between the registrations and the forum issue, but the next thing I’d suggest is to perform a version update to 1.6.9 (upgrading the forum module as well).

Thanks Brandon. I’m actually completely up to date on both the forum and main install (although my sig is not). I’ve been up to date long before this started. I had mistakenly thought that turning off registrations on one of my MSM sites turned it off on all of them. I’ve now turned it off on all 4 MSM sites.
I’ve anecdotally verified that these random registrations are the cause of my forum not working….it’s just happened AGAIN for the 3rd time. Each time the forum module stops allowing posting (and returns a 404) coincides with a flurry of these unpermitted / unwanted registrations.

I’m trying to figure out what could cause the forum problems…is it possible that the post date or forum date is somehow being changed…meaning that time sensitive / chronological things like new forum posts won’t post because they are from the from the past and thus couldn’t be put as a post ahead of existing posts that have a date that is current / newer than the one of the attempted post.

Mike, I’m having a similar issue on my forums. I posted in another thread of my issue, but it just seemed to happen yesterday afternoon or this morning. Completely and utterly frustrated.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I knew that EE’s vulnerability to spammers was a problem but I was beginning to think this forum problem was something specific to my specific site…at least I know that it’s not now.

I was wondering the same thing. To say the least, I’m really, really not happy. Our forums are the primary communication tool for our non-profit, and with an event this weekend, we cannot even set up schedules because it won’t let us post anything.

Everything seems to work for my forums except making postings. That seems to be the only issue. If I try to post, I get kicked back to our home page.

This is almost exactly what’s going on in my forum…everything works except posting. When you try and post it kicks you to our 404 page. I’m guessing in your case that your home page is used as your 404 redirect.

Yep. I even just tried downloading and reinstalling the forum as an update, but that didn’t do anything either.

Mike, I’ve updated my thread. We traced a problem using the server’s error logs. I have details here:
http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/155008/
This might also be what is happening on your site, though it still doesn’t explain why this suddenly happened.

Thanks. That’s interesting. I’m not getting that but I suspect it’s because of the way the custom 404 page is configured on my site.
