    Hi All,

My default CAPTCHA is not showing up in any instance. The field shows up but the image just does not want to load!

    I checked out this article:
    http://expressionengine.com/knowledge_base/article/captcha_images_arent_appearing/

and can confirm I am using:

    1. The correct file path and url path

    2. Permissions are 777

    3. Turned off True Type Fonts in admin

    4. GD Library is installed (It works fine for the upload and re-sizing)

    5.  The system/lib/words.php file is in there

    ExpressionEngine 1.6.8 - Build:  20090723

    _____________

I appreciate your help, this is the first CAPTCHA I’m implementing on EE, so it is a bit of a mystery to me. I read a whole bunch of forum posts but nothing has been helpful

    Thanks!  😊

Does the words.php file need to have CHMOD 777 status?

Hi Jack, I don’t believe that file itself needs 777 permissions.  A few questions:

    1. You’re a build or two behind.  Can you perform a build update?
    2. Are you logged out when testing the captcha?
    3. Is there a link you can share?

    Hi Brandon!

    1. Unfortunately, I can’t do an update because the site has been turned over to the Company’s IT dept and I don’t want to walk them through it for this. This CAPTCHA thing is a minor request to stop some spam for a few months and I’d prefer not to do an update.

    2. Yes, the way it works is that if I am logged in - I am not even allowed on that page. It tells me I am already a logged in member.

    3. Do you mind if I share it privately via PM? It’s a live site serving their customers but it’s not “high traffic”.

    Thank you so much!  😊

    Hi Jack,

It will be difficult to troubleshoot when we’re on different versions.  Essentially though, when you view the source of the page, what is the link to the captcha image (you can replace your domain with something else)?

    Hi Brandon,

This is the output I get…

<span class="highlight">*</span> Submit the word you see below:

    <input type="text" name="captcha" value="" size="20" maxlength="20" style="width:140px;" />

So from what I can see on my personal website where CAPTCHA works… I’m missing the entire <img> link between the and </br>

Jack, double-check the code tags on your previous post - the forum is filtering some of your code.

    Jack,

As this is a Member Registration page can you check that you have Enable Membership Captcha  set to Yes

Admin ›  Members and Groups ›  Membership Preferences

Can you also let us know if you have any extensions installed.

Are files being generated inside /images/captchas/?

    Hi Donovan!

    1. Yes, I have toggled this on and off to get it to work for days! I’ve turned it off when not troubleshooting because it is a live website. It is on now if Brandon sent you the URL (which I will send now)

    2. I had nothing installed except for the jQuery for control panel but in testing to get CAPTCHA to work, I installed JA re-CAPTCHA and Advanced CAPTCHA with nor results.

(I’ve discovered JA re-CAPTCHA only works on comments)

    3. If you’re asking if there are any files in the images/captchas/ directory… no.

Thank you so much for helping!

What about server permissions in the /images/captchas folder?

You mentioned GD, what about GD2?

    Hi Sue,

I can confirm that 777 permission is there and PHP GD is in fact installed.

The website is already using it for uploads and resizing correctly.

    Thanks for helping!

Jack, can I have you download and run the Server Wizard and MSG me back a link to where you have it running?

I ran the server wizard and this is the problem:

CAPTCHAs feature and watermarking in Image Gallery suggested No

    However:

Image Thumbnailing using GD, GD2, Imagemagick or NetPBM suggested Yes

I’m not the server administrator - is there something or someplace I can link the IT person to activate this?

I really have no experience with server image processing apps. Is there a control panel for GD?

    Thanks for your help!  😊

The wizard only checks for the existence of the “imagejpeg” function. If it doesn’t exist, EE cannot create CAPTCHAs. Ask your host about it, this is a server configuration issue.

That’s the problem - my client is a tech company and runs their own server. What I would like to do is to just email them a simplified set of instructions for them to check…

My contact at the company is a Project Manager of sorts and wants to understand the scope of the undertaking before devoting IT time to it. (CAPTCHA is not mission critical to them but very annoying)
