Is there an upgrade path for personal licenses? Did I miss it in the FAQ?
The Personal license has been renamed Non-commercial in EE 2.0 so the upgrade path is Personal/Non-profit EE 1.x to Non-commercial EE 2.0 RC.

stphnmartin - here is the Upgrade Policy.
Selcia - this will not change in ExpressionEngine 2.0 RC. See this post from Leslie.

The pricing is covered in the FAQ: How much will ExpressionEngine 2.0 RC cost?

We don’t have a target release date for 2.1 as it depends on the unknown. If you need a thoroughly tested version of EE for a project, EE 1.6.8 is the way to go. Its got 4+ years of real world use behind it. There is no need to rush to EE 2.0 RC if you are concerned about it. You can start with 1.6.8 and move over once EE 2.1 is available if that’s your preference.

I have been anticipating this for a long time, and sometimes frustrated with the lack of information. But I can say without hesitation that now you EE folks are doing a fantastic job of communicating. And I was wondering if I’d even upgrade, hardly use it but do tinker around with EE occasionally. But based on your straightforward upgrade policy, I’ll do it. Again, great job on communicating this out to the community!

I’m chomping at the bit to get my hands dirty with 2.0. 😊
Exciting times!
Most of the questions thus far have focused primarily on licensing issues. I’m hoping it’s ok to ask functionality questions.
I’m excited that there will be a field API - does this mean that we’ll see a set of field types with the initial release. If so, will these be the standard Checkbox, Radio Group, File, Matrix?
My next question is in relationship to custom fields and how they behave - will Channels be assigned Field Groups as with the 1.6x branch or will 2.0 employ a field to multiple Channel approach similar to how Brandon Kelly’s Gypse extension allows 1.6x to function?
I have a ton more questions but I’ll stop here.
Thanks!

As mentioned in the blog post for this thread we won’t be answering “how does feature X” work questions prior to release. Fortunately, the wait is almost over and then I’m sure we’ll be answering tons of those on a regular basis, say for the next 10 years (we really don’t want to rewrite EE again lol).

Leslie,
:red: I need to apologize. I came at this post thru the forums and didn’t read the linked blog post initially.
Sorry.
Thanks for the quick response.

What about the requirements for ExpressionEngine 2.0. Are they the same as what’s listed here?
http://expressionengine.com/overview/requirements/
The web server requirements are now part of the FAQ. If your host supports PHP 4.3.2+ and MySQL 4.1+ you should be good to go.

EE Core 1.6.8 will remain available but there are no plans for an EE Core 2.0 at this time.
It’s a sad news. What about all the non-profit websites made by hobbyists who don’t need all the features of the full version and don’t want to pay for it simply because they don’t run any kind of business? And, above all, how do you want to convince new users to try EE 2.0 (or switch from Wordpress, for instance)? I always said them: Yes, you can have a free core version, you can give it a try and when you don’t want to use any other cms than EE, you will buy your license. And now there will be not such an option anymore.
It’s a wrong move, I’m affraid.

Its a fair question. When we asked for feedback from people about Core only a few of the numerous emails we received said that they used core for live projects. The vast majority of non-profit and personal sites are already on EE Personal/Non-commercial licenses because they want the tech support. We have no indication that a significant amount of people rely on Core for mission critical projects.
So while this is definitely a point of concern for us there is little to no data supporting it.
And, above all, how do you want to convince new users to try EE 2.0 (or switch from Wordpress, for instance)? I always said them: Yes, you can have a free core version, you can give it a try and when you don’t want to use any other cms than EE, you will buy your license. We have a way that people will be able to try the full version of ExpressionEngine 2.0 RC for free on their own web host. The Core feedback received all said “I tried Core, loved EE and went with the full version. If I couldn’t freely download Core, I’d have never have tried it.”
Our intention is to make it very easy to grab the full version instead of a feature limited version so you can evaluate the full version from day one. So you can still tell people they can try EE for free and if they love it, buy it.
It’s a wrong move, I’m affraid.
We’ll see. If it is, we’re flexible and figure something out.

The FAQs say the download account is going away and that security updates for 2.0 will be free. What is happening to 1.6.8 accounts where the download account will expire before we plan to upgrade to 2.0?
Ex: Download account expires in March, client will probably not upgrade to 2.0 until June. Client will want access to security updates for 1.6.8 from March - June. Will these updates be free, or will they need/be able to renew their download account in March?

best wishes
