@Johan, load->module_model() is not Modular Extensions it is Matchbox. Modular Extensions follows the CodeIgniter conventions properly.

It needs a Friendster library. Once upon a time (2002ish), before MySpace and FaceBook and Twitter and the rest were worth billions of fictional $, Friendster was where it was at. The web site still claims: “With more than 110 million members worldwide, Friendster is a leading global online social network.” Not a day went by, back then, without someone trying to befriendster you. A warm glow spread over the Internet in the form of invite spam. Most of those 110 million profiles are database zoombies today, and Friendster is busy applying for, and getting, various patents on the theme of “connecting people over a computer network”. With social media being as mature as it is, the latest patents from Friendster aim to provide compatibility scores for its aging users: “a unique methodology used to calculate compatibility based on expressed interests between users of a social network”.  Anyone here want to discuss methods and models? CI obviously needs a library so we can get in on this social media orgy organized by the patent lawyers.

alright crimp thanks for the creative before bed story .... so what did you say friendster is all about ? ..... hehehe, just kidding , so do you think that this library is is important enough to provide it with the official codeigniter?, or you think an available community library would be enough ?

I would like to see a CURL library…

    Priceless: http://codeigniter.com/wiki/Curl_library/

Works great, goes nicely with encryption library for coding credit card payment solutions.

The encryption library should have an extension to help with private-key public-key encryption schemes, such as those used by OpenSSL.

You mean some people don’t like to look at the wiki or in the ignited code section?

yeah, they are not patient to do it, they are in a hurry, so they simply ask… and let us reply

Some things I would really like to see in CI are a proper more advanced cURL library, handling even https properly (as it seems this one can kill some brain cells if you really need it), and a nice JSON library. Both of them I really needed in my last project, and built from scratch myself, using regular basic oop. But still they were built to fit my needs, nothing too fancy. If someone has a more general solution it would be nice to share…

about JSON: you can use the two functions json_encode and json_decode, or you need more of that, cuz i use these two in my project vunsy, they satisfy my needs.

I believe CodeIgniter really should come included with a cURL library, a Cache library and the bloody download() method for the FTP class I mentioned to Derek Allard over 2 years ago!

What improvements did you have in mind for my cURL library? Always happy to receive feedback - as long as it’s constructive.

Ugh… sorry, mate, I havent used your cURL library. I was searching the core files for something that will work. When I have some spare time I will check your cURL lib and will write you a PM if there is something that may come in handy, and is actually missing.

    About the JSON class…
Well the problem is I couldnt simply use the php5 functions for json encoding/decoding. I needed a parser that would work on older versions, too. I am using the json as a means of transport wrapper it for some crazy client-server synchronization over an unsecure http session (combined with a more crazi encryption). The server side is using a php 4, so I didnt have much choices. I found some lib that worked properly and with slight modifications it worked for me, but it would be nice to have something in the CI itself. It may not be a library, but a helper or something. But a built in feature in the framework itself will be nice.

    Best Wishes,

The only real native functionality I think is missing is a good auth module with permission based roles.  Yes there are good libraries out there, but I believe this functionality is needed in the core.  Every project I have worked on so far needed one.  I think its rare in this day and age we build a site that doesn’t need one, so it seems more the rule than the exception.

Me, n0xie and Derek were talking about this exact example. Permissions are so vague its very difficult to put them into a generic library. You have to take so many different approaches into consideration that it becomes ridiculous and over-coded (like most of Zend).

    Whitelist or blacklist?
    user/admin or unlimited?
How do you store these users/permissions?

And thats just the problems I can think of while im watching the newest episode of Californication. It would be near impossible to do this well, and its REALLY out of the scope of CodeIgniter as a framework.

I find that every project I work on needs a web-design, and I dont expect CodeIgniter to provide me with one of those too 😉
