One of EllisLab’s goals for this year is to get out and meet people in person whenever possible. We started this at SXSW by meeting in small groups, the Community Summit, and of course the party on Saturday night. We loved it and from the feedback we’ve received, so did everyone who was able to attend.

SXSW led to some speaking invitations, something we’re happy about, but also readily admit that its relatively new territory for us. As the long timers know, we tend to be on the introverted side, with the notable exceptions of Greg and Robin (and their awesomeness at SXSW).

Being difficult to attend the events for myself - although i could go from UK to Netherlands…
I have one query that would be interesting to discuss and get the standpoint on - again not critical but interested.

There are some really great extensions out there, and I like many others are pro third party developers, free or paid. However, what would be the position for EllisLab if they wished to replicate such an extension / plugin / module, etc into the EE system by default. You could easily have a whole heap of examples from ImgSizer (free), to other paid and wonderful plugins for tasks such as META and SEO improvements.

Now, many people (or maybe just me) would like to see things like meta/seo plugins as default in EE as potentially they are in other CMS’s. But by doing so you “might” be stepping on the toes of great third party developers who “might” then stop developing for EE as their is less benefit (be it fame or fortune or gratitude).

Now i am sure the answer is a careful “balance” between the development of the system, and keeping developers on board. But where that line is drawn must be tough and how do you make that call? I mean, one extreme would be to rip of the best, and have an extensive library of EllisLab plugins (i guess also pushing up the core price). To the other extreme which would be not including these wonderful ideas and perhaps the system falls behind… i don’t know! Do you buy out the third parties - again i do not know…

    What are your thoughts?

I’d like to hear your thoughts on the potential for EE to be used for Custom App Dev.  Is that what was meant with ‘EllisLab 2.0: The Road Ahead (with respect to Mr. Gates)’?

Yep, it’s me, the broken record 😊

    An ongoing 4 year request…
Make it easier to find/organize with other EE users in (or close to) ones location by adding more detailed location details when registering an EE product with an opt-in checkbox to join some kind of local/regional group. Maybe even a Google map that allows one to see who is close by - similar to what Flickr does with images.
    Not necessarily user groups though.

Randy that’s a fine suggestion, though this blog entry is about speaking topics by EllisLab representatives at events.

It’s on topic in a round about way - You’d probably have more places to give talks if we could easily organize 😊

I’d like to hear about how you deal with all working remotely from one another.  Erskine are in a similar position so I’m always interested to see how others work.

Maybe just as a blog post rather than anything else.

I’m interested in that too. I thought Erskine was based in one location (office)?

Are you talking about version control? I am trying to get the guys from Versions to the EECI conference. They should be able to share some thoughts on working on a project from different places.

Collaboration would be an interesting topic. I went pure over the net a few years back when strictly doing websites but haven’t found that to work as well the last couple while doing more straight consulting. Maybe just don’t use the right tools.

Little offtopic but it would be nice if we could see the actual event after its over, or if there is no possibility to video it (if someone doesnt want to show him/herself etc. problems) it would be nice to get detailed article about all the main things such as if the ideas like “Community Questions: You send us your questions, we’ll answer them” or “EllisLab 2.0: The Road Ahead” make it to final schedule.

Do you publish the official list when its done? I would love to come to the European Event but as far as i can see it atm. its not possible to me :( That’s why i would like to see best parts with details and well written articles. Not so interested to see party pics but you know (hopefully) what i mean here!

    Cheers

I think you have an excellent internal list. What I am really interested to hear about on that list are (decreasing priority)

    - Scaling a company and a community from 1 to 100,000
    - Practical approaches to CodeIgniter development
    - Lessons from ExpressionEngine 2.0 development (also titled, “Bad Ego, bad!”)

Other topics on which I would value EllisLab’s input are:

    - Lessons learned while fostering the development of an EE ecosystem
    - Balancing support resources for users with widely (wildly?) differing IT skills
