    Read this.

Short version.  Ellislab doesn’t give dates because they are difficult to give.

Other version. Launch dates are easy to give out but difficult to keep.

    The best answer is:

it will be out when it’s finished.

We know a developer preview of “Kaylee” has just gone out to a select few developers, but they’re focusing on the code, not the app as such. A more general public beta will be released after that, and the final release is still further off. My estimate would be “this summer”.

Hehe.  People were saying it would come out “last summer”, last summer, so I wouldn’t bet everything on it.  And I know they say go ahead and use 1.6.x, but there are features in 2.0 that just make things so much easier for a non-techy client to manage their content with, it’s just depressing thinking of doing all the training with each client only to have them call you to make updates anyway.  I pee my pants every time I see a 2.0 blog post.  I have several projects on hold until 2.0!!! But, I’m trying not to get my hopes up for this summer, because that’s what I did last summer.  :(  From the previews, I think it’s been worth the wait though.  These guys have done a great job.  And Veerle’s interface looks nice.  It will be interesting to see first-hand.  I think several other CMS’s are doing a great job too.  Wordpress’s re-do of their control panel is nice.  Drupal is undergoing HEAVY usability re-working now.  And, it’s very possible it’s going to be done well, since Mark Boulton’s on it.  That too seems like it will be quite a while though.  One of his blog posts says he’ll be switching to Drupal once they’re done, but they’ll be the first to admit that right now, it’s a usability night-mare.  So, I appreciate all the time that the EE team is putting into this.  Good job guys!  We are SO anxious!

you’re answer is fine for an open source software - however, since you have many paying customers and I’m one of them, I don’t think this is very professional.

That is a harsh response. What you pay for is 1.6.7 right now and they continue to support it well. We don’t even have to know they’re working on 2.0.  The method of software releases they use is why brought a great product to such a large community…of paying customers.  It works well for them and the majority of their community.

I have several projects on hold until 2.0!!!

Just work on your projects and get them out the door in any way possible.  It doesn’t matter if you have to release it on Bill and Ted’s most excellent CMS.  Just get them out the door.  Don’t put your business on hold for anything.  As a web developer, if I were to put off all future client work in anticipation of EE 2.0 then I might as well quit and add myself to the swelling ranks of the jobless.  You may not be in the same business, but the situation is ultimately the same.

edit:  I really mis-understood you. I work full time and do an occasional freelance job on the side. None of which are urgent. I agree. If I waited for the latest and greatest for each client and depended on them for income I certainly would be screwed. Waiting on EE 2 isn’t so much for the client as it is for me. I seldom have the spare time to support clients on the side if I end up updating their sites for them. I’d rather not do it at all if my support is going to suck. So, I’m anxious for EE 2 because of it’s potential to make it a little easier for me to take an occasional side job. Other than that, I fully agree with you.

I don’t think that’s a harsh response at all - I pay for a product regardless or the version as well as the future of a product - as a customer either I believe in a product and trust it incl. where the product is going in the future or I don’t - based on this I decide whether I want to pay the license fee or whether I should go with an opensource software - an answer like “we just don’t know when we release it” or whatever would be more customer - anyway, you have your opinion, I have mine - I have been working in the service industry for many years and this is just I would try to treat my customers.

I think it is harsh in context.  I don’t disagree, but in the context of this company, it’s what works. And for EE, if they’re able to do it without going out of business, then Id much rather have an outstanding product than an incomplete product.  I’m all for them doing it right, and I’ll buy it. Definitely wouldn’t do that for all products though.

You did misunderstand me.  It wasn’t personal and I’m not frustrated (replying to what you said before your edit.)  I just subscribe to this school of thought.  Really my post was more of a general reply to “waiting for x to happen before I can do y” as opposed to any discussion about ExpressionEngine 2.0 (there is nothing more I can add to that discussion which has not already been said before.)

So you’d rather an incomplete piece of software? As a previous poster has commented, you’ve never paid for EE2, you’ve only paid for the previous version.

You never pay for a future model of a car, only the one you buy from the show room.
