Can an attendee elaborate on this please - I assume ‘Upload’ will do what Mark Huot’s file currently does but what is ‘Numbers’?

It provides a “numeric” field type, including validation when submitting the entry, as well as true numeric sorting for the orderby= parameter (MySQL treats numbers in text fields differently when sorting).

Just as a quick question on the Numbers field if I may? Did it take a lot of extra code to get this working, especially for the orderby=”“ parameter or is it quite easy or was it easier now that 2.0 is running on CodeIgniter?

Just wondering if it’s possible to do this sort of thing in 1.6.x or am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Best wishes,

    Mark

The two are unrelated, Mark - it’s strictly a question of how MySQL is utilized, and having the PHP code to back its execution.

I’m trying to imagine situations where the feature would be useful. Is a product catalog stored in a channel one of the intended scenarios? Storing prices, stock level, etc. in a numeric field?

Correct, Benoît.  Essentially, anything where you need a number instead of text.

Could you please elaborate on what is meant by “true file management?”
I assume it covers more than the new flat file integration with the template manager but could explain what is meant?

E.g. can I point EE to a directory and use it to rename, edit, modify the files? Can I associate type-specific editors to the files? Can I access file metadada from within templates?
One scenario that I have in mind, when I read “true file management” is to ditch my FTP client. Since I publish a podcast I often to send (and modify) large MP3, AAC and M4V files. The FTP client allows me to open the file in a metadata editor but, of course, it means downloading the file, modifying the metadata and uploading the resulting file… which is somewhat slower than when working with text files.
Is this a scenario where the EE file manager would be useful?

It makes a lot of sense. Nice add-on feature.

Great roundup of SouthBy. Sadly enough i’ve not been able to attend from Europe. However, very very good to hear that some of the major re-questions from the community are fulfilled like file management and template management, especially template insert and synchro thru file for text-mates and -wranglers.

So I guess that means that doing this in 1.6.x isn’t going to happen? Would it mean hack to the core code then?

Mark this really isn’t the appropriate place to discuss feature additions to 1.6.x.  Short answer: yes, to get this in 1.6.x now you’d need to either hack the core or use an extension.  No need to reply with an apology, there’s no harm done, but let’s let this thread get back on point. 😊

Thanks to the EE crew for a great time at SXSW. It was exciting to see 2.0 in the works, but more importantly it was really good to get to know everybody behind the scenes that I’ve talked to so many times on the boards. And thanks again for the PF Chang’s as well. Leslie, let me know if you need me to hit you with some Michael Hedges tracks.

Thanks for the update—this all sounds awesome. I do have one question, with regards to 1.6.7 (and apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, I’m on vacation right now and haven’t been around the forums much). Will 1.6.7 be the final release in the 1.x branch, or might we see a 1.6.8 or 1.6.9 release down the road?

It means that there is a dedicated File Manager in EE 2.0 that is available throughout the CP. In 1.x you can only upload via the Publish/Edit interface. Its certainly not meant to compete with a dedicated FTP app, but it allows a lot more than can currently be done in 1.x. It is also not the same as a desktop OS type of file management. I’m not going to list out every feature it includes, but I wanted to set some sort of expectations here 😊

Think of it this way, 1.x is in “maintenance mode”, meaning any updates will revolve around keeping it secure and stable.
