EEConf 2024 is around the corner! EEConf 2024
hi everyone,
is everybody holding their breath or are they working on the last fixes to update their software? it feels that the rest of the ee-world, like devot-ee or devdemon for instance, haven’t noticed at all that something fundamental changed with the release of this new version.
or is there some place to ee-news and modules and stuff i didn’t know about? compared to releases like the latest mac os or ios or android this release of ee 3.0 seems to be really quiet?
we are a small office in germany and are really happy about this release because it looks and feels much more logical and refined … not only for us but more important for our clients which have to use this on a daily basis. so we were waiting for this day of release for some months because we’ve heard very often from clients (and other developers too) that ee 2.10.1 and lower looks a little long in the tooth compared to wordpress or the very popular typo3 or typo3 neos.
and in the last weeks i was pretty surprised not to read anything about new versions of channel_images or publisher, mature tools that so many ee-installations use. but i thought maybe they are working on new versions and release them parallel to the ee-3-release.
but nothing happened, not even a note about how and when and if, which is surprising given the fact that NOT A SINGLE module or plugin works with the new ee-3-architecture. at least they should have one line in their FAQ saying “the current version only works with ee 2.10.1 but not the latest 3.0 release. please be patient.”.
i think that ee 3.0 means very much in terms of coming of age and is really well done for a 1.0 release regarding the new look, plugin-architecture and such. shouldn’t be there some developers paying respect to this and give their customers more informations about if and how they plan to support this?
regards, matthias
I have to agree.
The release of 3.0 seems like a massive non-event. At this point it seems more of a public beta. I went to Devotee and the EE 3 Ready Addons select produces exactly 5, count em 5 results.
Are developers abandoning EE? It’s not like the 3.0 release hasn’t been in the works for a while.
And as you say, even on major sites like Devdemon there is zero mention of 3.0, nothing.
All the major addons should have come out with 3.0 versions on the same day as the launch of 3.0.
When was the last time you built a client site without a single addon? Never. Which means 3.0 is unusable at this point.
I guess these forums on Ellis are totally dead at this point. 3.0 was launched 5 days ago and there is hardly a mention of it on the forums when they should be buzzing with discussion of the new version.
wow.
Same here! I came on here looking for any discussion on EE3 and found it almost non-existent. (also googled and came up with just the blog post from Ellislab) I just did a fresh install with EE3 on my new Arcustech account. It was a bit weird but alas looks like it worked. (gave me an error when i hit install, then i closed out and reopened browser to go back to admin.php and there it is…the log-in screen)
Are we still suppose to rename the uploaded system folder to something else? because when I tried that and updated admin.php and index.php to the new system folder name it gave me incorrect path errors. I mean its something ive been doing for pretty much every update.
I ended up changing it back to ‘./system’; and now its normal again. So i’m left wondering if I should still change the system folder as a best practice measure.
Yes, agreed. I came here looking for information about EE3 from early adopters and beta users and the almost total absence of any discussion in the forum (and the wider web) is rather worrying. I have two projects that I will shortly need to build a CMS into and I’m wondering whether it will be wise to use EE, especially now I cannot even buy a license for the fully tried and tested EE2.
I was really excited to see EE3 was available so I instantly upgraded and tried to install a testbench to try it out, and instantly hit a dead-end with some “Unable to connect to your database” error, something I had never encountered with any version of EE2. And upon coming here to seek answers I found there wasn’t even a sub-forum for EE3.
EDIT: FYI I solved the issue by rebuilding Apache with PHP PDO enabled.
Most of our team just came home from the EE conference, so I think I can shed some light on this. Mostly it seems to be a concern about add-ons.
A lot of add-on developers have tweeted their release status and timelines:
DevDemon is converting all addons P&T is working on a public roadmap
Several others have posted publicly:
BoldMinded (Publisher) has a blog post Solspace has posted an upgrade plan Low has a post on his update plans
Those are some of the big ones, but there are many others.
All the major addons should have come out with 3.0 versions on the same day as the launch of 3.0.
Oh I wish! I don’t think it’s realistic for us to expect developers to release as we do, EE add-on development is still a side business for many. We could’ve kept 3.0 in beta longer and waited for add-on developers to finish their conversions, but how do you decide when to make that call? We felt that the core was solid enough to warrant a release and I expect in the next couple of weeks we will see the add-ons catch up and updates to 3.x will become easier.

If you buy EE 3 we give you access to a download of 2, and will continue to do so for the next year.
I think there is valid criticism about the state of this forum and we’re working on it. In the meantime, I would invite everyone here to join the eecms slack room.
Wow I don’t mean to sound ungrateful…but I’ve been just running into 1 issue after another even with a clean install and no plug-ins with EE 3.0. Lucky for me I’m not developing for any clients or else there would be some hair-pulling going on. I’m going to go back to using 2.10 and let this EE3.0 play itself out over the next year or so.
I’m actually shocked and impressed to see how desert this place is now. There is not even a EE 3 category in the forums either.
I knew some people where moving on but I expected to see at least some excitement and forum activity after EE 3 was launched. This post is so far the biggest action I see in over a week. Counting me that is 6 people…
I’m seriously starting to question how many people or websites are still actively using Expression Engine and how many are going to use EE3 in the future.

2 is already legacy: https://ellislab.com/blog/entry/version-2-end-of-life
Well the decay of the forums is totally our fault, and is not reflective of the use of ExpressionEngine by any means. Hence, why Pascal said we know it’s important to address. When we stopped conducting support in the forums, it basically became a ghost town, an unintended consequence of improving our support queue. Definitely join Slack, it’s currently where the chatter and excitement is.
> I’ve been just running into 1 issue after another even with a clean install and no plug-ins with EE 3.0
That hasn’t been the experience of most users even during the beta, so definitely file a bug report for any issues you find. I’ve been running version 3 on my personal site since the early developer previews, and it stabilized during the beta. It is definitely production-ready software, but inevitably when it starts getting in the hands of thousands of users and on countless hosting environments, edge cases crop up.
I have two client sites running EE2 and I only learned about EE3 when I got an add-on update notification from Devot-ee and the changelog mentioned EE3 compatibility.
No emails to current license holders announcing the launch?!
No guides on how or what to expect when transitioning a site to EE3?!
We’ve essentially been put on notice that we have 1 year (prior to EE2 retirement and end of life) to transition everything to EE3. For some complex sites with a lot of add-on dependencies and integrations and limited developer resources, that’s actually not much time.
For one site I was planning a front end design overhaul in the coming months, but now I have to merge that plan with a major platform upgrade as well.
I’m excited to see EE development progressing but this doesn’t feel like a well-planned launch. Very poor communication and setting/guiding of expectations for how to actually get and keep things functioning in the production world.
If you buy EE 3 we give you access to a download of 2, and will continue to do so for the next year.
Just to clarify: if I buy a new license for EE3 tomorrow, will I be able to download and run an installation of 2.10.1 using that same new license? (For some reason, I had formed the idea that EE3 uses a different licensing system with the key ‘hard-coded’ into the download. My reading of the recent statement by Ellislab was that EE2 was being retained as a download for a year for the benefit of existing license holders.)
No emails to current license holders announcing the launch?!
@Collin H:, how do you subscribe to news from EllisLab? We have the blog, the newsletter (subscribe below), Twitter, Slack chat, and announcements in your ExpressionEngine 2 control panel news feed, which is enabled by default. A newsletter for the launch and a few other things are coming soon, but those are typically staggered from the actual launch. Not all marketing efforts occur at the zero hour.
As for sending an email to all current license holders: as a business operator, I like the idea, but as a customer, I don’t know. We can send transactional email to everyone who has an account, but unless you’ve opted in to the newsletter, most email services will not allow us to use your email for marketing, and I’m typically not a fan of unsolicited email. We could allow opt-in during checkout, though, so point taken.
No guides on how or what to expect when transitioning a site to EE3?!
Templating didn’t change, and we do have have a guide for upgrading to version 3, and the new control panel is fully documented. We do have more resources planned, but we felt everything that was needed was in place for launch. Afterall, shipping software is the most important thing we do. All other efforts are meaningless if we don’t ship.
We think one year is plenty of time, particularly since a site doesn’t have to upgrade to keep functioning. There are actually thousands of ExpressionEngine 1 sites out there, and they are still running fine. It’s the site owner’s prerogative as to whether and when to upgrade. But we’re not inflexible, so if one year turns out to be too short for the majority of customers, we will surely extend it.
Just to clarify: if I buy a new license for EE3 tomorrow, will I be able to download and run an installation of 2.10.1 using that same new license?
@idwatts: Yes! And if you need MSM, additional sites that you purchase for ExpressionEngine 3 will automatically be available to you in your version 2 legacy download. This goes for both upgrades and new purchases. I’ve clarified that in today’s blog post and we’ve added a note with ExpressionEngine 3 in the store.
Derek, thanks for the quick response. I’ll admit I’m probably an anomaly in that I’m not active on Twitter, and I opted out of the PixelBuzz emails some time ago when it seemed like they were only about conferences and so forth which I don’t have any interest in. I’ve resubscribed to the emails. As far as the blog, as much as I’m sure you’d like for everyone to check in there on a regular basis, the reality is I’m too busy and don’t think about it more than a few times a year. I’ll pop in and read a few of the latest posts and then I’m gone.
I understand and appreciate your concern with unsolicited email, but speaking as a customer I wouldn’t have a problem in the world with an email announcement from you based solely on the fact that I bought a license in the past.
Still, the lack of EE3-specific forums and not having more prominent links to those guides and documentation (thanks!) seems odd. I signed up for Slack but at a glance it appears to be a glorified chat spot. If these forums here on your site aren’t all that active and you’re pushing people to Slack, why even have these?
Things just seem to be scattered and disorganized. That’s my perception anyway, but maybe it’s just me.
