WYSIWYG again! How do you handle the clients?

    Hi all,

I have tried all WYSIWYG Editors in the last years. The last ones to try out were Editor and Redactee.

I like the different Editors and I can handle them, because I know how to program html. I don’t even have a favorite really, all of them have their pros and cons.

My biggest problem however is, that when I put myself in the “client-head” mode I am always shocked what the Editors produce. Empty ‘s, weird divs, paragraph nesting and so on. I tried pasting from word, from textedit in both formatted and unformatted mode and typing directly. Never have I seen or reached a state in which I could say that I would happily pass this on to my clients.

Now I am asking if the problem is myself who wants to get perfectly formatted html outputted be Editors. Am I worrying too much or do I want too much, expect too much of these Editors? Should I just let my clients fool around with it or should I train them better and/or expect them to have at least a basic understanding of html?

How do you handle it? What about the 50 year old typical secretary managing all the phone-calls and mail who is now also supposed to occasionally update some informations on the company’s website.

    Thanks and Cheers, Marc

I may be misunderstanding your question, but if your using a CMS like Expression Engine, surely the client should not have to use a WYSIWYG editor? One of the biggest strengths of EE is that all the client has to do to add data to the their website is fill in a entry form in the EE backend. No WYSIWYG editor needed.

Well, I was aiming towards Blog Articles and the such. Whenever clients want to add/mix text and pictures, add image captions for example. Or when they want to rearange things on the page, have different “areas” eg. Info Boxes with a certain background-color, floated right… “ah, no I’d should rather be floated left…” 😊

It proved that Content Elements does this job pretty well already and is supposed to be upgraded soon to expand it’s capabilities. Also I am liking Editor from DevDemon a lot. It’s the best and fastest approach I have seen yet. I also like Wygwam but Editor just feels “cleaner”, less clunky.

Make sure they use the “Paste as text” functionality (available in ckeditor based editors such as wygwam/wyvern). There’s also a config flag called ‘forcePasteAsPlainText’ which should be true in settings).

But I’ve seen this flag not always working. So your best bet is to educate them to always use the “Paste as text” functionality.

I use Wygwam and Channel images for images.
