How do you cope with burn out?

I haven’t touched a line of code in a few weeks.  I used the holiday as an excuse, but the reality is I am getting very burned out with code. Sometimes I don’t know what the eff i’m doing..sometimes I spend hours on minor un-important details (because I’m a perfectionist)...sometimes I come up with a unique way of doing things that I’ve never seen done (or seen done, want to replicate the process), but I have no idea how to accomplish it and I spend forever trying to figure it out.

When all is said and done, I’ve spent hours, sometimes days, accomplishing NOTHING. The result is frustration and burnout.

Any tips for me? would appreciate it a lot.

I don’t know. Get married, have kids. That forces me to get shit done.

I would suggest finding a new technology that interests you.  Maybe learn a new programming language.

I’ve found that learning a new programming language can really re-energize you for coding and in the process you become a better developer all around.

I also use this method but I recommend if this is the route you choose to excercise extreme caution.

Improper use can cause an increase of burn out, limit cash flow, decrease or total loss of sex life, thinning hair, and/or countless other side effects.

At the moment I’m working 4 days a week as a web developer + freelance work + creating a project for myself in my spare time. To keep sane I make sure I do other things that I’m interested in as well. I make sure I watch my favorite TV shows, go to the beach. Play the sports I enjoy (football/soccer).

A few months ago I saw a friend programming while watching a TV show in the corner of his monitor. At the time I just thought that this would be unproductive and not useful at all. Since then i’ve tried it a few times and it actually works well when you’re not in a mood to do any work. You don’t code particularly quickly or anything, although having something there to keep you preoccupied spices it up and you can take regular breaks to watch the video.

Whenever I feel so burned with work.. coding, especially when solving some particular problem, I play games on my iTouch for a few minutes. It makes me relax and makes me think of something else aside my codes. Sometimes I read some news on the net. Sometimes I’ll just browse my facebook and see what everybody else is doing.

This and reverse engineering another application. Getting to see how someone else implemented a complex problem usually inspires me and shows things i may have never thought of.

I wouldn’t say that I am burnt out, but I am going through a phase where I am more interested to learn a foreign language. I chose Hebrew for a few reasons. There are lots of websites that help you learn a language, and you can dream of a great vacation where you are fluent in the language. I have always wanted to go to Israel, because I am a Christian. If I know Hebrew and go there, it will be really awesome (although I heard they all know English anyways). I’ve been doing some lessons at a place called livemocha.com, and maybe something like this would interest you? They have many languages to choose from. It’s kind of cool to me, because it is like a game, but while I play the game, I’m also learning a language. Much like Rosetta Stone, only free!

I have a simple Q for you…when was last time you had some sex? And I am not joking 😉 If is more than 2 weeks ago, you need another one. If is once daily or one every 2 days, you need a psycho 😊)

Last time I did this, I was watching “The Big Bang Theory”, one of my favorite sitcoms, and some lady made a big fuss out of it. Ok first of all, I’m the only person in this plant that does what I do. Second of all, I have NO social interaction at all all day long, I talk to no one, no one talks to me. I get all my specifications sent in emails and I eat lunch in front of my computer. Third, wtf lady you try doing what I do and see if you could actually spend 8 straight hours coding. I find that when I was able to watch TV I was cruising through work. Whereas now I’m slow and I’m like peter from office space, 15 minutes of real work a day.

I deal with burnout by starting a new project and never finishing the last.  :cheese:
