Hi need to re-open thread here: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/115270/

NOTE: we’ve just had a feedback to suggest that EE doesn;t play nice on windows servers - is this a deal breaker for certain? Client has just signed a contract with new hosting provider with windows only servers and we need to get 3 EE sites transferred and working.

    Thanks in advance.

Let’s keep it to this new thread, shall we? What problems, exactly, are you experiencing? What version and build of EE are you on?

EE as such does not have any problems with a Windows server environment, but it needs to be setup and configured correctly. To get the best PHP & MySQL performance out of IIS, in particular, requires some server admin experience. This is not an issue with EE as such, and if you have a knowledegeable host you should be fine. Many people run EE on Windows.

Hi Ingmar yes will keep to this thread - would like to get resolved as efficiently as possible. Good to know that EE runs on windows ok. As far as server admin experience goes - have none so will have to get some advice from the host as to what version/build etc so we cna give you more specifics… thank you will update as soon as I have more info 😉

I am a bit lost here as to what the issue at hand actually is? Anything not working as intended right now?

Imgmar I’m just trying to clarify - the developer that was handling the install for us had to move on suddnely and I’m now trying to resolve it but I’m in between EE tech support and the hosting tech support - and I have no server admin experience - please bear with me as I get specific answers to your questions. Thanks for your patience.

ps - maybe it’s a good idea for us to post a job on the network for a server admin to simply move the sites (there are 3 of them) from the Apache / Linus environment that they are happily running on now, to the new windows server enviroment? Just a thought - I’m sure the client would be open to that as he’s just trying to, like me, get the problem resolved asap without taking up unnecessary time for any of us - this may not be the place I shoudl post this but any suggestions on this are welcome.

Mark, I understand what you are saying, but I am not sure this is the right venue for it. We are handling all our Tech Support in this forum, and give high priority to these threads, but we have to be able to address specific issues in order to do so efficiently. Please review our support policy, if you would. If you are looking for a more open-ended discussion, perhaps the “Howto”, “General”  or “Lounge” forums would be a better fit?

This sounds like a good idea, too. Otherwise, if you attempt to do it yourself / for them let us know if and when you run into any problems. While we can’t really support issues with server configuration and such we can probably help you with any EE related problems 😊

Ok just got access to FTP from the host and the URL to the CP. Comnig back with database error:  Database Error: Unable to connect to your database. Your database appears to be turned off or the database connection settings in your config file are not correct. Please contact your hosting provider if the problem persists.

Have triple checked that username/password/database name is correct. EE version showing in config file is 167. Not sure what build or where to find that info. Is there anything else you need?

Are you able to connect to that database using something like PHPMyAdmin or Navicat?

What does the hosting company have to say about what you should use? If the host has a support forum, have you checked to see if everything there is working?

There is a dbtest.php file in the /system/utilities folder. You’d need to edit the file.

Let us know what happens when you run this.

Hi Sue - they don;t have a forum but do have a support/ticket system and are quite well established (at least here in Oz anyway) - Phypmyadmin etc is well outside my skillset so I’m at a loss with that - I’d have to ask them if we have access to it. Ok thanks for the guidance thus far.

ps - I was able to edit / run the dbtest and this is the result:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client in e:\inetpub\svc177\cms\utilities\dbtest.php on line 12

Unable to connect to your database server

Ok so if I understand correctly this is not technically an EE support topic - which forum fo you think would be best suited and how do I move the topic?

    As to your issue

Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server

is most likely a server problem. You might want to read these two threads, and see this page of the MySQL docs. Can you tell us the exact PHP version you’re using?

Ok thanks for the referring documentation Imgmar - guess we’ll have to get a techie to decipher it and go from there - the PHP version was initially 5, but we got it downgraded to 4.3.1 to match the version number on the original environment (initially we suspected the php version to be at fault).

I seem to remember there was an issue with 5.0.5, which is why I was asking. And yes, you’ll probably need somebody well versed in administering such servers. At any rate, let us know how you get on.
