Is there any way to do this? I’ve tried the wiki workaround and htaccess file change to no avail.

I am afraid that i don’t have an answer but i do have (almost - hosting is with names.co.uk) the same question. I am building a website for a charity and the owner of the site has spoken to their hosting service and told her that she needs a rewrite.script which we have to write.

My client is convinced that the URL as is poses a security risk and is unwilling to go live until it has been shortened. Who do others think about this?

I have to agree thought that URL is unwieldy to say the least, here is a typical example:
    http://www.charity.org.uk/eedir/index.php/eedir/about/

Let me begin by saying that keeping index.php is certainly not a security issue, let alone risk. That said, this wiki entry is unfortunately the most we can offer in terms of support.

good that was my opinion too and i will pass on that piece of information. I will have a read thru the wiki entry and try to implement it on the charity’s site.
