Have worked and worked with my hosting company to get this resolved, but thought I’d come here and get some advice.

I am working with a hosting company that has never hosted an EE site (at the request of the client… so I am stuck with them) and they don’t support PHP-mail or Sendmail, only SMTP. When I go to submit an e-mail from the contact form, it spins its wheels for about 5 minutes then gives me an HTTP 500 Internal Server error.

I’ve gone through and checked the SMTP settings multiple times with the client but they are correct. Never had to use the SMTP setting, so I am a newbie on this one.

Thanks for any advice on this. The client is all over me to get this figured out.

Enable email debugging at Admin > System Preferences > Email Configuration. What error message, if any, do you get? Also what version and build of EE are you on?

    Version 1.6.6
    Build: 20081031

I’m not getting an error message, just the HTTP 500 message from the contact form and from the communicate tab after 5-10 minutes of processing. I have it set to show PHP/SQL errors in the Debug preferences, but still not getting anything there either.

Thanks for the quick response btw!

A 500 error is notoriously difficult to troubleshoot, because there can be any number of reasons triggering it. Again, your host should have access to web server logs and should be able to tell you what’s going on.
