mini laptops are nice and some people love to have one…but I think mini laptops are not suitable for me because I don’t want to scrimp my eyes on its small screen. My huge fingers are not also compatible with the keyboards…anyway, this is just my humble opinion. Overall, I give an 8 out of 10 score for mini laptops because they are ultra portable.

Its nice to code at bed, write a mail or read a text. Sometimes to talk via Skype and to substitute a cellphone at home, in a wi-fi wireless network. Or even to show a little piece to a client, without formalities.

But work all day in a small machine its not confortable. Believe it!

I work at office with a 19” and at my homeoffice in a 22” monitor (next month to a dual 22” setup). Your eyes will thanks to you!

Way too small! At least for web development.

I use a 15” laptop for most of my work and even that screen is WAY too small… so I plug in a 22” widescreen lcd flat screen and assign it as a second monitor on the machine. Now I have a dual screen laptop with enough screen real estate to do my work.

One side of the screen usually includes the browser while the other includes various pieces of software for coding, image editing, etc…

I can never go back to using one screen while working… especially a tiny 9” screen. No thanks!

Just my two or three cents worth…

Anybody have an opinion on the mini laptops the ones that come in at like 9” screen size, they are too small right?

Those little suckers are small. These days they’re called “netbooks” I guess. I’ve seen prices ranging from $300 to $500 but haven’t seen one that resembles a quality product. Super slow CPU, tiny keyboard, tiny screen, Windows Vista, Homeless version.

I’ve read that Apple will come out with a netbook at Macworld 2009, but my guess is that Apple already has a netbook. It’s the MacBook Air. The only problem is that it’s priced about $1,000 too high.

What can people use a netbook to do besides email, browsing, and movies?

That’s the point of these machines, they’re all about portability. ppt, email, video, simple word processing that’s it.

No one would want to work on them. I also think that a laptop larger than 12” is a waste, due to weight and bulk concerns. I have a 12” and it’s large enough to do some work on, but small enough to be portable. a 14”, 15” or 17” laptop is the opposite of portable. Besides a desktop will always be better and more powerful than a laptop.

The best laptop I ever owned was an original Apple 17-inch aluminum PowerBook. I had it almost six years (swapped out the hard drive after three years). The machine was a rock. Literally and figuratively. It just worked. The 17-inch screen was wonderful. I seldom turned it off, even when traveling abroad. Close the lid, slide it into the bag, take off. I never had a Mac perform better or longer.

    I’ll never buy another one.

The screen real estate is nice, especially when compared to a netbook or even the new MacBook models, but I found it difficult to do serious work on even a 17-inch screen after having a 23-inch Cinema Display on my desktop. In the future, I’ll probably go for a MacBook (small and portable) but hook it up to a larger display.
