I have tried to create a new user who has the type “Members” which appears to work just fine and they appear as a valid user. BUT when i try to log in with the new user account i get the error message “You are not authorized to perform this action”. I have tried logging in from safari which has been used to access the site before so i cannot be some odd cookie thing.

I then created a user account of type “Super Admins” and i can log into this just fine.

Why cannot i not create working accounts of type “Members “?

You should go through the settings for the group and make sure they have proper access to login. I know it sounds elementary, but I have even skipped it on accident and I’ve built many sites with EE. Your message is pretty typical of improper permission settings. Super Admins can always do everything so that isn’t too much of a surprise. Where are you trying to log in? The Control Panel or a custom page?

thanks for the suggestion. I have looked over the group settings and Members i clearly not what i want.

I would appreciate some advice about how this would normally be done. I want to setup some editor users that have limited access to the control panel and can create new weblogs and edit current ones but not really do much else. Would folks normally create a new group for this or modify one of the standard ones? my sense it would be better to create a whole new group for this purpose.

    thanks

Yes, definitely create a new “Editors” group for that purpose, I’d say.
