Can someone explain what Categories and Category Groups are used for?

I have a website… and I have one main weblog.  And when someone publishes a entry I want them to choose what category it belongs to (in this case I am using category generally.. and not meant to reference EE categories).  So basically what will end up happening is this.

I want all entries to appear on the home page (News, Tips & Advice and Events.  Then if someone clicks a navigation to “Tips & Advice” I only want them to see the entries that are “Tips & advice” or if someone navigates to News…  they would only see those items that are NEWS.

I thought I would use a single category group assigned to the weblog and then select the appropriate CATEGORY to apply to the article.  But I guess you can only apply a category group to an entry and not just a category.

    Please help.

    Hi,

In the middle of sorting our categories. A category group just lets you “group” all your categories together. You can assign categories (within a cat group) to entries.

    CATEGORY GROUP (stationary)
    category 1 (pencil)
    category 2 (pen)
    category 3 (rubber)
    category 4 (ruler)

Then each entry can have none, 1 or more of the categories.

Not sure where the misunderstanding is, but this is certainly not the case.

Category groups are assigned to weblogs in the Weblogs > Edit groups interface.  That tells EE which categories to make available to users on the Categories tab while publishing.  Category groups only get assigned to an entry only by virtue of a category being assigned to an entry.

Weblogs can have multiple category groups assigned.
Entries can be assigned to multiple categories.
By default EE - if you have nested categories - will assign parent categories automatically when you assign a child category, but that can be disabled.

You tell EE to display posts in a certain category by creating category links - using either weblog:categories or the categories looping pair within the weblog:entries tag.  These links will create urls along the lines of :

example.com/index.php/weblog/category/news/ or example.com/index.php/weblog/C14/ - depending on if you’ve told EE to use category names in URLS.

When a weblog:entries tag sees that URL it will self-filter to only show posts from within that category.

How do I disable the parent categorie so that the entry only is assigned to a child category?

Ok this was user error.  I misunderstood how one applies categories to an article.  I thought you actually added or removed a category… when actually you just highlight or multiple highlight the actual category to apply.  This seems like a confusing interface.  There should be checkboxes to show which category is applied.
