Photo sets with gallery module

My goal is to create the equivalent of flickr photo sets. I’m building a website where I will need to upload photos for events, and I would like all the photos for one event to be in the same group.

As far as I know I could either create a new gallery for each event, or a new category. But creating a new gallery each time seems like overkill and time consuming, and categories feel like they were not meant to be used this way.

I guess I could also use the weblog module which is more flexible, but then I’d loose all the nice gallery features like batch processing, resizing, etc.

So what’s the best way to do it ?

I’d use categories/subcategories. You’d have a parent category for events and then a subcategory for each one (or maybe have another level in between for types or dates of events).

Little question here for you Tyssen.

Where can I find the sub categories 😊

Thanks for the idea. The main problem with categories is that they’re just that, categories. Which means that they’re not practical to use when you have, say, 100 events. If you had 100 categories, you would need to scroll through a huge drop down menu every time you add a photo.

Plus, the concept of a category as a group is a little counter intuitive for most users. They expect that you select the group first, then upload all your picture in it, rather than uploading a picture first and then selecting the category (and this also means you have to do it every single time rather than once at the beginning).

Right now I’m thinking that the best way is to add a playa (one to many relationships plugin) field to my events weblog, and relate the gallery items from there.

Playa doesn’t seem to work with galleries, so I’m using Mark Huot’s extension instead. It works pretty well. First you upload all your images to the gallery, then relate the weblog entry to them.

It’s not practical if you have hundreds of images, but for now it’ll have to do.
If you use prefixes for all image names (like wedding_01.jpg, wedding_02.jpg, etc.) you can select all related images at once when they are order alphabetically, so it should still be faster for the user than with categories.
