There’s no shortage of people looking for a complete social network solution and wanting to turn EE into that complete solution in some fashion (me included). I’ve had an idea for a while now for a small niche social network but haven’t had a way to develop it. I came across Elgg but it was still in the early stages of development and there wasn’t a lot of information on it and what could actually be accomplished with it. The Elgg site has been redone and looks like they’re really on the ball with the software. The sites they list as examples using Elgg are pretty good and have a lot of features I’m sure people are looking for in a social network.

Thoughts? Anyone used it? How difficult is it to get everything set up?

i checked it out for about 10 min, even installed it. bu i couldnt figure out what you could do with it or how. needs additional documentation, examples, etc. looks promising though. a solution like this is well overdue.

I agree. The documentation is really limited. I’m not going to get serious about it because I’m afraid if I get stuck, there’s really no where to turn to get help. Hopefully it will continue to grow and gain exposure. The site actually has much more information now than it did just a few months ago, so they are definitely growing.

I’ve actually heard about Elgg not more than a month ago. Installed it as well, but I couldn’t find much on it. Few friends of mine have started using it professionally, should check with them more and see what the deal is. But, definitively looks promising. EE as a social-networking tool? Now that’s a good idea. Even if it’s in a small scope, could be useful to manage/network a small community. Hmm, got me thinking…:)

Do you by any chance have any URL’s from your friends? It would be nice to see how people are using Elgg.

    Hi Deron:

I actually don’t at the moment as they’ve started using it just recently and not sure if they’re live with anything yet. Will post with an update.

However, this is what I found out through the Elgg Website:
    http://thebrightongallery.com/ - A good example!

i have been looking at Elgg since i saw it get a few awards for up and coming software 1-2 years back. It has improved drastically since then, but again documentation is where i found it to be limited…

Looks good! How difficult did you find it was to learn compared to EE? Seems like their documentation and community surrounding Elgg was lacking in comparison to EE.
