We have PCs and Macs here but we’ve yet to find a decent cross platform photo management suite.
iPhoto is ok on the Mac, I like Picasa on the PC but neither is cross platform.

Well I am not sure how basic or advanced you need it, but I swear by Lightroom. Amazing cataloging system and great for meta info.
If you need something without the key editing Microsoft Expression (which used to be the great iView Media), looks good although I am not sure how close it is to the original.
