How many email address can the communicate tab email to? Is there a certain amount where things just get to crazy or anything of the sort? For instance can it handle a mass email of say 3000 email address?

You’d certainly want to use the mailing list for mail runs of that size, and even then it’s probably not the appropriate tool. I’d say everything above a couple of hundreds max. requires specialized tools. That said, there is no hard limit to the communicate tab that I am aware of.

Can you recommend any good 3rd party mailing list apps.

There are a lot. Obviously, it will all depend on your needs and/or budget. Do you need statistics? Do you want to see how many people actually opened that newsletter, or clicked a link? Etc etc. I have worked with both Constant Contact and Vertical Response in the past, but there are literally dozens more.

Other good ones are mailchimp and ExactTarget, wide range depending on price and needs, however.
