I had no idea people could actually use more than 500 fields! I use around 10-20 different on the site I’m developing at the moment.

I agree, it seems a bit excessive. I really can’t imagine the handling in the CP ...

The smallest option is 0-50? I’m frightened.
I think I may have five. Of which I really only use one these days.

Unless you’re using EE as a replacement for straight database work (e.g. “golly i don’t feel like learning MySQL or php…i’ll use EE!”), i can’t imagine having more than a dozen or two. 90% of everything i use is the same 3 fields. Then some trickery comes in to manage things cleaner for clients.

Incidentally, 520 or so would be the absolute maximum that MySQL would allow in terms of EE’s custom fields, and all of them would have to be date fields, so I think the last couple options of this poll are going to be well outside of the bounds for what’s realistically possible.

Good God, man. I don’t think I’ve ever used more than 9. I don’t think any tab key known to man could withstand 500 fields per entry.

Per project, a maximum of 25. The average is usually around 10 for me. No where near 50.

I have about 30 and I hate it. I’m stuck though, until (hopefully) the EE crew decides to build in the ability to have multiple custom field groups assigned to a weblog.

I have thinked many times powerfull usage for custom fields so this might be good place to ask, to what kind of “functions” you use them? I think they are usefull but people dont use them…i have to make a testblog and play around and see if i come up with something usefull =) (that is then, when i have the time…puuh..)

In my case, the function is simply reader awareness.
In addition to standard blog content I also write fiction, and even a short story can take quite a while to finish. So, if I decide to post it while still in progress, whenever I add significant amounts of story I bump the publish date. I have a custom field in which I note whether the story is completed or still in progress.
I save the edge-of-your-seat nail-biting excitement for the content of the story. 😊

Came to my mind that you could use them to create additional “boxes” like: history, links, brief info about something etc. and then write the actual entry with summary(i use it for keywords), body (for the main entry) and rarely extended (that i dont use atm but soon i need to because the redesing progress within my site). Also you could use those as “picture boxes” etc. This came to my mind now =)

depends on the site but custom fields is something that I really like using to make the client’s experience better. Sometimes that means I am just being a control freak and not allowing them to enter data willy nilly around the site. But even for my own sites I want it to be easy. For a single template group on EETemplates.com I used 12ish custom fields…. images and content in different places and such dictated that….

Mostly in the 20-30 range here though I expect that to rise to 30-40 if it’s a complex site that needs lots of content “switches”
